Smallholder farmers’ perception on the environmental impact of eucalyptus plantations: The case of the upper Blue Nile basin of Ethiopia
In Ethiopia’s northern highlands, Eucalyptus species are increasingly favored by smallholder farmers due to their fast growth and economic returns. However, the rapid expansion of monoculture Eucalyptus plantations has raised environmental concerns. This study investigates smallholder farmers’ perceptions of the ecological impacts of Eucalyptus and the key factors driving its adoption on farmland. A total of 350 farmers were selected through mult…
Assessment of stakeholders’ roles and linkages in quality coffee production in Yirgacheffe District, southern Ethiopia: Implications for local adaptation to climate change
The study objective is to assess stakeholders’ roles and linkages in quality coffee production and the implications for adaptation to climate change in Yirgacheffe District, southern Ethiopia. Stakeholder analysis was performed to identify and characterize stakeholders based on their power and interest criteria and to assess their linkages and roles in quality coffee production. Additionally, a household survey with coffee farmers (stratified int…
Impacts of soil and water conservation intervention on rural livelihoods in the Middle Suluh Valley, Tigray Region, northern Ethiopia
Livelihood options of landless households and land contracts in north-west Ethiopia
Farmers’ livelihood assets and adoption of sustainable land management practices in north-western highlands of Ethiopia
In Ethiopia, farmers’ adoption and continued use of introduced land management technologies have not been widespread to reduce soil erosion and soil fertility depletion to an acceptable level. An important set of factors in farmers’ use of improved agricultural technologies is generally known to be their possession of livelihood assets. This study examines the influence of ownership of livelihood assets in farmers’ decisions to use cattle manure …
Land-use and land-cover change and its environmental implications in a tropical highland watershed, Ethiopia
This study analysed long-term land-use and land-cover change (LUCC) in a highland watershed covering an area of about 154 km2 in the Blue Nile basin of Ethiopia. Two sets of panchromatic aerial photographs (1957 and 1982) and a Landsat TM image (2001) were the main input data from which three land-use and land-cover maps were produced by employing geographical information systems/remote sensing techniques. These data were complemented by some soc…
Community perceptions of forest–water relationships in the Blue Nile Basin of Ethiopia
Assessment of gully erosion and practices for its control in north-western highlands of Ethiopia
This paper examines gully erosion and its damage, and existing gully control practices in two rural communities, in the north-western highlands of Ethiopia. Data were gathered from measurement of the dimensions of 26 selected gullies in a farmer-participatory approach. Descriptive statistics and regression were used for data analysis. The study found out that 88% of the measured gullies were wide and damaging. A total of 82,692 tonnes of soil was…
Climate change perceptions and adaptive responses of smallholder farmers in central highlands of Ethiopia
This paper presents an assessment of smallholder farmers’ perceptions of climate change, its impacts on agricultural production and adaptive responses in the central highlands of Ethiopia. The findings show that increased temperature and decreased rainfall are widely held perceptions; all respondents stated that they had observed increase in temperature and decrease in annual and seasonal rainfall amounts. The major impacts of climate change on l…
Soil and water conservation intervention with conventional technologies in northwestern highlands of Ethiopia: Acceptance and adoption by farmers
Land Cover Dynamics Since the 1950s in Chemoga Watershed, Blue Nile Basin, Ethiopia
This study evaluated changes in land cover in the Chemoga watershed, headwater to the Blue Nile. Two sets of aerial photographs (1957 and 1982) and a multispectral Spot image (1998) were used as inputs to produce 3 GIS-based land cover maps of the area. The results show that during the last 41 years, forest cover increased at a rate of about 11 ha per annum in the 36,400-ha watershed. Woodlands and shrublands decreased between 1957 and 1982 but i…
