  • Understanding Racism as Systemic: The Process of Learning

    Open Access•Cyndi Kernahan, Erik T Withers•ARTICLE•Sociological Inquiry•2026

Helping people learn about racism as systemic rather than as solely or even primarily as an individual and interpersonal phenomenon is important. In this study, we examined how two different courses may have affected the racial attitudes and understandings of our students. We found that students in both an introductory and an upper‐level course showed significant increases in the understanding of racism as systemic, using both quantitative and qu…

  • Keep Culture, Lose the Reductionism: Exploring Contemporary Cultural Spaces as Sites of Power Maintenance and Resistance

    Open Access•Erik T Withers, Manuel A Ramirez•ARTICLE•Humanity & Society•2020•References: 16

In this article, we argue for the importance of investigating cultural spaces in connection to social inequalities. We critically examine some of the past and present ways that culture and inequalities have been studied together.…

  • Whiteness and culture

    Open Access•Erik T Withers•ARTICLE•Sociology Compass•2017•Cited by: 11•References: 19

In this article, I argue that culture is the means through which whiteness (a state of normalized white racial domination) is accomplished. The scope of this article is on racism, race, and culture in a U.S. context. Within the racialized social system of the United States, culture develops in ways that secure racial interests and maintain racial hierarchy. The aim is to give readers an overview of how the concepts of culture and race have been a…
