  • Affect Control Theories: A Double Special Issue in Honor of David R. Heise

    Open Access•A Kroska, B Powell et al.•ARTICLE•American Behavioral Scientist•2023•References: 10

We introduce this two-part special issue that celebrates David Heise and his pathbreaking theories: affect control theory (ACT), affect control theory of the self (ACTS), and affect control theory of institutions (ACTI). These interlocking, multi-level, mathematically based theories explain a range of social processes, including impression formation, social interaction, trait and mood attributions, emotional experiences, emotion management, and i…

  • One parent, two parents, one sex, two sexes: Public attitudes toward single and same‐sex parents

Open Access•Simon Cheng, K Kelley et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Marriage and the Family•2022

Objective The aim of this study is to compare public opinion regarding single and same‐sex parents. Background Comparing attitudes about the effectiveness of single‐parents to same‐sex parents shows how much importance the public places on the number of parents compared to the sex of the parents; however, surprisingly little research examines attitudes about single and same‐sex parenting ability. Method We use data from the 2012 General Social Su…

  • Public Opinion, the Courts, and Same-sex Marriage: Four Lessons Learned

    Open Access•B Powell, N Quadlin et al.•ARTICLE•Social Currents•2015•Cited by: 18•References: 5

Social scientists often have been called upon to weigh in on social issues, and same-sex marriage is no exception. We draw on quantitative and qualitative data from a national survey to evaluate four of the most prominent arguments raised by opponents of same-sex marriage in court cases. Our data undermine these claims, leading to four lessons about same-sex marriage that we can surmise from public opinion: (1) opposition to same-sex marriage is …

    B Powell, Bernice A Pescosolido et al.•ARTICLE•Sociological Focus•2011•Cited by: 1•References: 2

This keynote address by the 2010 John F. Schnabel award winners discusses the emotional rhythms of teaching for the first time. Examining new instructors' self-reflections about teaching, the authors identify three phases of the emotional trajectory experienced by most instructors. It begins with the unnerving combination of anticipation, enthusiasm, and anxiety; transitions to an emotional dip in which the reduced emotional turmoil in the classr…

  • Advancing Age, Advantaged Youth: Parental Age and the Transmission of Resources to Children

B Powell, Lala Carr Steelman et al.•ARTICLE•Social Forces•2006•Cited by: 29

Using data from the National Education Longitudinal Study of 1988, we identify parental age as influential in the parental provision of economic resources, social capital and cultural capital to adolescents, as well as in parental educational expectations for their children. At the bivariate level, the relationship is curvilinear, suggesting that having comparatively young or old parents is disadvantageous to teenagers, at least with regard to re…

  • Social Location, Significant Others and Body Image Among Adolescents

Richard Levinson, B Powell et al.•ARTICLE•Social Psychology Quarterly•1986•Cited by: 5

Relatively little is known about factors that influence the extent to which self-perceptions of attractiveness diverge from the evaluations of other observers. Examined in this study are socialfactors that affect the self-evaluations of body weight provided by more than 6500 adolescents. Data are obtained from Cycle III of the National Health Examination Survey. Our findings suggest that adolescents tend to denigrate rather than enhance their bod…
