Should We Trust Their Statements? Discussing Trust Issues in Media Production Studies
This methodological article discusses trust and credibility in media production studies with a particular focus on four trust issues. These four trust issues concern industry informants’ explicit and implicit agendas, ambiguities in interviews, transparency about relational work, and trusting observations. Particularly, the goal of our article is to debate how both students and researchers in media production studies can address such issues aroun…

Influencer autonomy
In this article, we explore the often-overlooked concept of autonomy among influencers. We define influencer autonomy as the sense of control and self-governing freedom that influencers perceive in their everyday life and work. Based on in-depth interviews with 28 Norwegian influencers, influencer managers, and legacy media experts working with influencers, our research uncovers a complex interplay between influencers’ sense of autonomy and restr…
Collecting streaming services
In the streaming era, the very thing that defines it is what threatens to impede access to important media history and cultural heritage. Streaming’s barriers to entry and its interim content catalogs challenge the actual collection and preservation of it for research and teaching purposes. If researchers and libraries do not work together to document and preserve these, we will keep losing important sources and data. From a collection perspectiv…
Showcasing reality content on the front page
This article is based on a three-year-long content analysis of the use of reality TV content on the front pages of four popular video streaming services in Denmark: DRTV, TV 2 Play, Viaplay, and Netflix. The results give rare insights into front pages that are normally hidden behind logins but also longitudinal perspectives about the services' changing curation practices. In particular, the two institutions with public-service obligations, DR and…

Gatekeeping within the simplicity regime
This article investigates the kinds of evaluative practices that are employed when gatekeepers in TV want to maximise creativity. By analysing the evaluative regimes used in TV idea development, the analysis points to how a simplicity regime is used in the observed idea development sessions, with ideas being judged constantly as to whether they are clear and simple enough. Using observations, interviews and briefs as data sources, the article con…
Producing Online Youth Fiction in a Nordic Public Service Context
This article investigates the conditions for making online youth fiction in a public service context at a time when young people increasingly are abandoning both legacy mass media and linear flow television to consume and share content online. The article’s starting point is the production of online youth fiction in two Nordic public service institutions, the Norwegian NRK and the Danish DR, and it discusses how digitisation and new competitors p…
