The aesthetics and politics of obsolescence: Hand-made film in the era of the digital
This article discusses contemporary handmade film-making as a form of critical practice that is now developing within the context of celluloid obsolescence and the frequent proclamations about the waning significance of film in the digital era. Because of its engagement with the materiality of film, artisanal film-making offers itself as a form of metacinematic reflection - film reflecting on the possibility and meaning of its own disappearance a…
From Mallarmé to Mallet-Stevens: Reading Architectural Space in Man Ray's Les Mystères du château du dé
In 1928 the wealthy aristocrat and patron of the arts Comte Charles de Noailles commissioned Man Ray to make a film about his villa in the south of France. The cubist forms of the villa, designed by the architect and set designer Robert Mallet-Stevens, made Man Ray think of Stéphane Mallarmé's modernist poem Un coup de dés jamais n'abolira le hasard (1897). The title of the poem would, in Man Ray's words, 'become the theme of the film', reflected…
From Studio to Street: The Urban Photography of Man Ray
Dada and Surrealist photographer Man Ray is rarely associated with street photography, a genre popular with artists and writers of the 1920s and 1930s. Yet his work demonstrates a closer connection to this area than has previously been acknowledged. From the early Dada constructions to the later photographic depictions of Paris and New York, the city played a crucial role in Man Ray's artistic output. This essay explores Man Ray's urban photograp…
Eyes Upside Down: Visionary Filmmakers and the Heritage of Emerson
In a recent article in Jackie Hatfield's Experimental Film and Video, filmmaker–theorist Grahame Weinbren evokes the problematic nature of avant-garde film theory and criticism by drawing attention to the ‘power of a particular book’.1 Published in 1974, this book – P. Adams Sitney's Visionary Film2 – ‘changed the notion of independent filmmaking’ and, over thirty years later, ‘still hangs over the field’.3 Indeed, no other survey of avant-garde …

Industrial Conflict
"Strike-Proneness" and Its Determinants
Strikes are not an invariable symptom of unrest and are probably connected with other manifestations. The propensity to strike varies considerably for workers in different regions and industries, being strongest in homogeneous and isolated communities. Over time, the incidence of strikes is affected by the trade cycle as well as by political and social changes. In this century British strikes have become more frequent but less severe: with increa…
