Conservation and Co-Management of Rock Art in National Parks
Using rock art conservation as a focus, this paper outlines the levels of legislated protection afforded to designated natural and cultural areas/sites in Australia and describes the co-management approach adopted in 1998 in relation to Mutawintji National Park in western New South Wales. The park encompasses four different protection categories: a Historic Site, a Nature Reserve, a National Park, and a State Conservation Area. Known for more tha…
The ‘net zero’ carbon needs ‘billions of zeros’ capital. But what about cheaper solutions
Time flies, as CO2 and global temperatures continue to rise rapidly. We can no longer rely on expensive and unachievable or long-delayed new technologies, requiring investment and development to reduce carbon emissions in future decades. Current geopolitical uncertainties are looming while climate change and food insecurity are increasing, and the world's economy is struggling following the two most recent major crises of COVID and war in Europe.…
A method to select sites for sand and dust storm source mitigation
Sand and dust storms (SDS) are a natural phenomenon dominantly originating in arid and semi-arid regions. The vastness and changing distribution of the SDS hotspots, their inaccessibility, and financial limitations are the greatest challenges to projects combating SDS. To boost project success, a prioritized site-selection method which incorporates the physical and human variables interacting with SDS is applied in this paper. This ensures that p…

Desert
Colour illustrations of deserts are the next best thing to being there—and did you know that it has not rained for 400 years in parts of the Atacama Desert? Or that some rock paintings in the Kalah

Rock Engraving Chronologies and Accelerator Mass Spectrometry Radiocarbon Age of Desert Varnish
Interpretation of Rock Varnish in Australia
Rock varnish has a long history of study in Australia. Although Australian varnishes have biological, chemical and morphological similarities to varnishes in other continents, rock varnishes in arid Australia tend to be less stable than in other drylands. Still, with careful sampling, radiocarbon and cation‐ratio dating of rock varnish has been used to constrain the age of Henbury Meteor Craters, Northern Territory, and rock engravings in South A…
Desert varnish as an age indicator for Aboriginal rock engravings
Varnished Engravings and Rock Weathering Near Broken Hill, Western New South Wales
The extent and nature of varnish cover within engravings is compared with that on adjacent rock surfaces at a site near Broken Hill, and the Implications of these observations for relative dating are discussed. The preliminary investigation suggests that the differing degrees of varnish cover present do not represent a sequence of separate varnishing phases, in which the oldest varnish has the greatest percentage of cover
Government assistance and the changing distribution of dairyfarming in Australia
International commodity prices and the distribution of livestock industries in New South Wales, Australia, 1971–1974
Changes in the distribution of dairying in South Australia, 1966 to 1972
Regional variations in dairying activities in South Australia
