Semantic Segmentation of CT Data of Oak Wood for the Creation of Wood Anatomical Climate Proxy Archives
In this study, an automated method was developed for the semantic segmentation of computed tomography ( CT ) data of oak wood linking the fields of wood anatomy and image analysis. The method reliably and rapidly segments whole vessels regardless of the presence of tylosis, which frequently is a major problem in wood anatomical studies. Analysis of the segmented vessels can contribute to the expansion of wood anatomical climate proxy archives. A …
Cut and covered
Knowledge of historic changes in vegetation, relief, and soil is key in understanding how the uplands in central Europe have changed during the last millennium, being an essential requirement for measures on forest conversion and nature conservation in that area. Evidence of forest‐clearing horizons from the medieval period could be systematically documented at four low‐ to mid‐altitudinal sites (360–640 meters above mean sea level) in the Harz (…
Current Issues and Recent Advances in Australian Dendrochronology
Trees and shrubs constitute one of the most widely distributed terrestrial stores of environmental information. To date, dendrochronological exploitation of information stored in Australian plants has mostly relied on development and analysis of cross-dated ring-width chronologies or ring/growth zone counts. Thus far, however, ring-width chronologies have only been produced from sites in the relatively seasonal climates of southeastern and southw…
