The commodification of social relationships in agriculture: Evidence from northern Ethiopia
The Rush for Land in an Urbanizing World: From Land Grabbing Toward Developing Safe, Resilient, and Sustainable Cities and Landscapes
‘They are stealing my island’: Residents’ opinions on foreign investment in the residential tourism industry in Tamarin, Mauritius
The small nation of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean, once a poor sugar plantation island, has successfully diversified and expanded its economy since independence, by attracting foreign investment in manufacturing and modern service industries. Tourism is a major part of the ‘Mauritian Miracle’; in recent years residential tourism—attracting wealthy foreigners to take up semi‐permanent residence—has become a growth industry transforming coastal are…
Local Development in the Context of Global Migration and the Global Land Rush: The Need for a Conceptual Update
This paper argues that global linkages, flows and circulations merit a more central place in theorization about local development. In particular, we make connections across two dominant types of global flows that shape our world tremendously: international migration and large-scale land investments. The paper compares the two hypes and underlines the similarities in their genealogy, rhetoric and push for good governance as a solution. It then map…
Capacity development or new learning spaces through municipal international cooperation: Policy mobility at work
The importance of strengthening local governments is widely recognised as local governments face new challenges against the backdrop of global decentralisation processes. Municipal International Cooperation (MIC) contributes strategically to such processes by peer-to-peer learning within existing local institutions, a development process that is both efficient and provides continuity. Empirically, the paper draws upon the findings of an evaluatio…
Reframing the Land Grab Debate: The Need to Broaden and Deepen the Agenda
This article does not present new evidence about the land rush, but reveals the urgent need of broadening the debate by including a few key issues that are so far neglected. Transnational land acquisitions are a logical outcome of globalisation and neoliberal policies resulting in processes of disembedding land from local societies. Control over land is decreasingly vested in territorially defined communities or societies, and increasingly dictat…
Looking forward: Translocal development in practice
This paper discusses the concepts of translocal development, development corridors and development chains, based on the insights obtained in the preceding case studies. As intermediate theoretical concepts they provide a geographical framework for understanding local development in a context of globalisation. The implications for policy include the need to give more attention to the relational dimensions of local development, complementing territ…
Introduction: Translocal development, development corridors and development chains
This paper offers an introduction to this Special Issue of International Development Planning Review. It uses the concepts of translocal development, development corridors and development chains to secure a better grasp of what development means in the context of globalisation and how 'local development' needs to be refined. Rather than producing transnational communities and spaces, globalisation is resulting in translocal patterns of developmen…
