  • Alluvial Fan Dynamics - Revisiting the Field

    Open Access•Cal Scheinert, Cal R Scheinert et al.•ARTICLE•Geography Compass•2012•References: 75

This article contains a new critical review of six predominant themes that have evolved over the last 40 years related to studies of alluvial fan dynamism. The themes include the development of conceptual models, field experiments, physical models, numerical models, high-resolution morphometric analyses, and climate change scenarios. Each theme is presented independently, but as highlighted in our concluding statements there should be greater eff…

  • Relict nebkhas (pimple mounds) record prolonged late Holocene drought in the forested region of south-central United States

Open Access•Christopher L Seifert, Randel Tom Cox et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2009

The origin and significance of pimple mounds (low, elliptical to circular dune-like features found across much of the south-central United States) have been debated for nearly two centuries. We cored pimple mounds at four sites spanning the Ozark Plateau, Arkansas River Valley, and Gulf of Mexico Coastal Plain and found that these mounds have a regionally consistent textural asymmetry such that there is a significant excess of coarse-grained sedi…
