The impact of fossil fuel burning related to scientific activities in the McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica: Revisited
Fossil fuel use associated with scientific activities in the Taylor Valley, Antarctic has been examined to determine the fluxes of particulate organic and elemental carbon and nitrogen as well as NOx for the 2015–2016 austral summer field season. These carbon and nitrogen fluxes are compared to our previously published calculations for the 1997–1998 austral summer. In addition, we compile fossil fuel usage and resulting C and N fluxes from the ma…
Variations in Dissolved Nitrate, Chloride, and Sulfate in Precipitation, Reservoir, and Tap Waters, Columbus, Ohio
Urban potable waters can be very susceptible to human activities that can impact water quality and, hence, public health. Columbus, Ohio, is currently the 14th largest city in the United States with an estimated population of ~860,000. Much of the urban population receives its water supply from a series of reservoirs located north of the city proper. These reservoirs are fed by river systems that drain either large agricultural lands, or rapidly …
Water and urbanization
Forecasting human water needs into the future is an extremely important goal, especially for urban areas with large populations. Padowski and Gorelick (2014 Eniron. Res. Lett. http://dx.doi.org/10.1088/1748-9326/9/10/104004 9 http://dx.doi.org/10.1088/1748-9326/9/10/104004 ) suggest that population growth along with ecosystem service needs and agricultural usage makes many cities vulnerable to water shortages. This work provides new information s…
Hydrological Connectivity of the Landscape of the McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica: Hydrology of the McMurdo Dry Valleys
The McMurdo Dry Valleys (MDV) of Antarctica are composed of nearly 2000 km 2 of ice‐free terrain, supporting a vibrant cold desert ecosystem despite harsh conditions. The ecosystem is largely regulated by the hydrologic cycle within the MDV, which is controlled by climate dynamics. The strength and timing of connections among the hydrologic reservoirs of the MDV (atmosphere, glaciers, soils and permafrost, streams and their hyporheic zones, and l…
Impact of Land Use and Physicochemical Settings on Aqueous Methylmercury Levels in the Mobile-Alabama River System
Mercury (Hg) concentrations above levels that could pose health risks have been measured recently in predatory fish from many aquatic systems in the southeastern region of the United States. Based on hypotheses derived from published experimental data on the aqueous geochemistry of Hg, we investigated the effect of certain natural and human-imposed conditions on in situ levels of methylmercury (MeHg) in the Mobile-Alabama River System (MARS). Wat…

The Mcmurdo Dry Valleys Long‐Term Ecological Rsearch Program: New understanding of the biogeochemistry of the Dry Valley Lakes: A review 1
The McMurdo Dry Valleys Long‐Term Ecological Research (MCM‐LTER) site represents the highest‐latitude location of the 24 LTER sites supported by the U.S. National Science Foundation. Although the perennial ice‐covered lakes in the dry valleys have been investigated since IGY, detailed, ecosystem‐based studies have been conducted on these lakes since 1993 by LTER investigators. A review of recent findings on the biogeochemistry and food‐ chain dyn…
Major features and forcing of high‐latitude northern hemisphere atmospheric circulation using a 110,000‐year‐long glaciochemical series
The Greenland Ice Sheet Project 2 glaciochemical series (sodium, potassium, ammonium, calcium, magnesium, sulfate, nitrate, and chloride) provides a unique view of the chemistry of the atmosphere and the history of atmospheric circulation over both the high latitudes and mid‐low latitudes of the northern hemisphere. Interpretation of this record reveals a diverse array of environmental signatures that include the documentation of anthropogenicall…
