Scale-Dependent Correspondence of Floristic and Edaphic Gradients across Salt Marsh Creeks
Biogeographers emphasize the presence of scale-dependence in vegetation–environment relationships. This research addresses the issue of scale-dependence, focusing on spatial correspondence of floristic and edaphic gradients across salt marsh creeks at Skallingen, Denmark. We employed a hierarchical approach, which compared vegetation and soil gradients at both fine and coarse scales. At the fine scale, we used ordination techniques to identify th…
Wind-Driven Sea-Level Variation Influences Dynamics of Salt Marsh Vegetation
Long-term variation of mean sea level has been considered the primary exogenous factor of vegetation dynamics in salt marshes. In this study, we address the importance of short-term, wind-induced rise of the sea surface in such biogeographic changes. There was an unusual opportunity for examining field data on plant species frequency, sea-level variation, and sedimentation acquired from the Skallingen salt marsh in Denmark since the 1930s. The en…
Salt Marshes as Potential Indicators of Global Climate Change
Coastal scientists postulate that salt marshes are significantly affected by dynamics of global climate. However, few studies have explicitly proposed a perspective that regards salt marshes as potential indicators of climate change. This review article evaluates the possibility of salt marshes as indicators of global climate change, focusing upon three major aspects: sedimentary, vegetation, and biogeochemical dynamics. The previous literature c…
Holocene evolution of a drowned melt-water valley in the Danish Wadden Sea
Cores from the salt marshes along the drowned melt-water valley of river Varde Å in the Danish Wadden Sea have been dated and analysed (litho- and biostratigraphically) to reconstruct the Holocene geomorphologic evolution and relative sea level history of the area. The analysed cores cover the total post-glacial transgression, and the reconstructed sea level curve represents the first unbroken curve of this kind from the Danish Wadden Sea, includ…
Spatial heterogeneity and domain of scale on the Skallingen salt marsh, Denmark
Geografisk Tidsskrift—Danish Journal of Geography 109(1):95–104, 2009 Spatial heterogeneity and the domain of scale over which such heterogeneity is observed are fundamental topics in biogeography. Focusing upon two facets of heterogeneity, or spatial point pattern and spatial texture (i.e. arrangement of patches and gaps), this study quantified how these facets vary across scales on the Skallingen salt marsh, Denmark. We established a 10 m x 10 …
A late Holocene palaeoenvironmental record from Altona Bay, St. Croix, US Virgin Islands
Geografisk Tidsskrift, Danish Journal of Geography 108(2):59–70, 2008 A reconstruction of the palaeoenvironmental development of Altona Bay, St. Croix, northeastern Caribbean, has been made based on the sedimentological, geochemical and pollen analyses of a 1.83 m long vibracore. For chronological control, AMS 14C measurements were made at 5 levels downcore. The sedimentary sequence covers the last c. 4,700 years, containing both (mangrove) peat …
Late Holocene sea-level changes and isostasy in western Denmark
Cores and exposed cliff sections in salt marshes around Ho Bugt, a tidal embayment in the northernmost part of the Danish Wadden Sea, were subjected to 14 C dating and litho- and biostratigraphical analyses to reconstruct paleoenvironmental changes and to establish a late Holocene relative sea-level history. Four stages in the late Holocene development of Ho Bugt can be identified: (1) groundwater-table rise and growth of basal peat (from at leas…
Composition and size distributions of local and advected sediment trapped over a tidal flat during moderate and storm conditions
Geografisk Tidsskrift, Danish Journal of Geography 106(1):1–11, 2006 Vertical profiles of settling rates in an array of traps trapping suspended matter on a micro tidal flat indicated a large vertical resuspension flux up to about 1 m above the bed during moderate conditions. Size distributions of trapped material were used to fingerprint the origin of the trapped material. The lowermost trap always contained samples with bimodal distributions. A…
Total sediment budget of a transgressive barrier-spit, Skallingen, SW Denmark
Average sea-level rise in the northern part of the Danish Wadden Sea has been 1.3 mm a−1 during the last 100 years but during the last 25 years a rise of 4.2 mm a−1 was observed. Concurrent with the recent sea-level rise the Skallingen barrier spit has migrated landward by 3–5 m a−1. Long term sediment budgets for each of the morphological units involved in the migration are reviewed (e.g. onshore in the shore face +90.000 m3 a−1, longshore -641.…
Sediment transport across a tidal divide in the Danish Wadden Sea
Water and sediment transport were measured and calculated during a two months period on three locations at a 3 km long tidal divide in the Danish Wadden Sea. The water transport was flood dominated in the largest channel, almost neutral in the smaller channel and ebb dominated on the tidal flat. The tidal currents were short and strong during flood tide and long lasting but weak during ebb tide at all three stations. This tidal asymmetry caused t…
Colonisation of Spartina on a tidal water divide, Danish Wadden Sea
The spread of Spartina on a tidal water divide has been followed in subsequent aerial photos. Spartina first appeared in the area in 1964, it spread rapidly to 1976. From 1976 to 1988 a significant die-back is observed. This die-back was more than recovered in 1995. Apart from the tidal range, no single physical factor (number of storm surges, rise in mean sea level, temperature) in itself appears to account for the spread. The die-back period ha…
Grain-size distributions of sandy sediments—sieving versus settling
Geografisk Tidsskrift, Danish Journal of Geography 99: 9–17, 1999 Settling analysis are becoming common practice in many sediment laboratories. By analysing sieved sand fractions of varied sample weight in a settling tube, it was found that the optimal sample size for the settling analysis can be calculated as (Sl-units): Sample size = 55.4 dsiv (dtube)2. Grain-size distributions based on settling analysis, differ systematically from those of tra…
The Backbarrier Sediments of the Skallingen Peninsula, Denmark
Geografisk Tidsskrift, Danish Journal of Geography 97: 11–32, 1997. The Skallingen peninsula is formed by sand derived from the south-going littoral drift along the North Sea coast. The backbarrier has accumulated sand as a result of wash-over deposits. In the beginning of the 20th century, fine grained sediment started to cover the surface in form of salt marsh deposits. The sand on the peninsula consists primarily of fine sand with a mean grain…

Sediment tansport in the drainage area of Ribe Å
Bartholdy, Jesper, Bent Hasholt & Morten Pejrup: Sediment transport in the drainage area of Ribe Å. Geografisk Tidsskrift 91: 1–10. Copenhagen 1991. The river Ribe Å has a drainage area of 950 km2 and a mean annual run-off of 15.6 l/s/km2. Supply and deposition of sediment in the drainage area were investigated during the period 1984–86. The denudation based on the measured supply of bed load and suspended bed load is very unevenly distributed in…

Sediments and Dynamics in the Varde Å Estuary
Bartholdy, Jesper: Sediments and Dynamics in the Varde Å Estuary. Geografisk Tidsskrift 80: 64–71. Copenhagen, June 1980. The Varde Å estuary is supplied with material from two sources: the drainage area and the turbidity maximum in the N-part of Ho Bugt. The first supplies bed load and suspended material, whereas the latter supplies fine-grained, flocculated material only. The sediments and the dynamics related to sediment transport in the area …
