  • Challenge-oriented regional innovation systems (Coris): Sustainability Transformations in the Timber Sector

Open Access•Miriam Hug, Irmi Seidl et al.•ARTICLE•Regional Studies Regional Science•2025•References: 2

Given ecological and economic challenges in natural resource-based industries, the timber sector is usually not perceived as particularly innovative or transformative. However, in the Austrian province of Vorarlberg, this industry has played a key role in socio-economic transformation since the 1960s when so-called Baukünstler (building artists) started to revolutionise the local architectural scene with their timber houses. • Peak event: The rise, crisis and potential decline of the Olympic Games and the World Cup

    Open Access•Marguerite Müller, Martin Müller et al.•ARTICLE•Tourism Management•2023•Cited by: 4•References: 26

This paper tracks the growth of two of the largest tourist events: the Olympic Games and the Football World Cup, drawing on a dataset containing all events between 1964 and 2018. Overall, the size of the three events has grown about 60-fold over the past 50 years, thirteen times faster than world GDP. We identify an S-shaped growth curve and four different growth periods, with an emergent crisis phase in the late 2010s that may have brought us to…

  • The mega-events database: Systematising the evidence on mega-event outcomes

    Marguerite Müller, D Wolfe et al.•ARTICLE•Leisure Studies•2022•Cited by: 4•References: 33

Although events such as the Olympic Games and World’s Fairs are among the largest of mega-projects, there is little systematic data to evaluate their outcomes over a longer period of time and across multiple sites. This research note describes the first longitudinal database on mega-event outcomes. It lays out the rationale and major goals of the database, its methodological approach and content, and its challenges and limitations. The database a…

  • Transformative enterprises: Characteristics and a definition

    Open Access•Miriam Hug, Heike Mayer et al.•ARTICLE•Geography Compass•2022•References: 61

This paper contributes to an emerging discussion about transformative enterprises, which are increasingly seen as change agents in sustainability transformations. Some scholars have hitherto described them as pioneering enterprises that strive for fundamental changes towards sustainability at different scales. Economic geography has, however, so far glossed over a micro-perspective on such enterprises. In this paper, we define transformative ente…
