Racial and ethnic differences in health
Race and ethnicity are commonly examined variables in health research. However, racial and ethnic disparities in health and the systemic mechanisms that generate them remain insufficiently understood. As a result, efforts to reduce these inequalities remain fragmented, and progress toward health equity has been limited. In this article, we discuss four problems that continue to constrain research on and efforts to address racial and ethnic health…
“These Conversations Shouldn’t be Easy … You’re Going to Have to Shift. It Means Reflection … It Means Change”
Little is known about racialized women's work experiences in EDI/AO policy-led Canadian women's organizations in the gender-based violence (GBV) sector. The two themes examined in this paper: a culture of silence and …
Anti-oppression as praxis in the research field
Equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) and anti-oppression (AO) policies are implemented in research to address intersecting systemic barriers for marginalized populations. Grant applications now include questions about EDI to ensure researchers have considered how research designs perpetuate discriminatory practices. However, complying with these measures may not mean that researchers have engaged with AO as praxis. Three central points emerged …
Addressing avoidable vision impairment in Mozambique and the Africa region
The Mozambique Eyecare Project was an international partnership to implement and research eye health education in Mozambique and the Africa region. An optometry degree was developed at Universidade Lúrio, Mozambique. In addition, existing eye health workers were upskilled with training. Researchers from various disciplines evaluated the project and its potential for impact on eye health in the region. The body of evidence generated from the resea…
Evolutionary Theory of Mate Selection and Partners of Trans People
Despite much research into mate selection, non-heterosexual populations are often only included for comparison purposes, while trans people and their partners are overlooked. This study attempts to address this using qualitative methodology to explore the mate selection of the partners of trans people. Six participants were recruited from online communities and interviewed via instant messaging, the results were then analysed using Interpretative…
