  • British Radio Drama and the Theater

Hugh Chignell•CHAPTER•Oxford Handbook of Radio and…•2024

The multifaceted relationship between theater and audio drama grew in significance during the COVID-19 pandemic. As theaters closed, stage plays moved to radio or online, and some playwrights turned to radio and podcasting. This chapter examines theater and radio drama at the BBC over the past one hundred years. In the prewar period, stage classics dominated radio drama, particularly Shakespeare. The golden age of British radio drama in the 1950s…

  • Bloomsbury Handbook of Radio

Kathryn Mcdonald, Hugh Chignell•BOOK•Bloomsbury Handbook of Radio•2023

The Bloomsbury Handbook of Radio presents exciting new research on radio and audio, including broadcasting and podcasting. Since the birth of radio studies as a distinct subject in the 1990s, it has matured into a second wave of inquiry and scholarship. As broadcast radio has partly given way to podcasting and as community initiatives have pioneered more diverse and innovative approaches so scholars have embarked on new areas of inquiry. Divided …

  • Nesta Pain: The Entangled Media Producer

    Kate Terkanian, Hugh Chignell•ARTICLE•Media History•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 4

The ‘cultural translator’ is an individual who expresses the essence of entanglement in their career choices, moving between genres, media, or nations. This article suggests that the BBC producer and writer, Nesta Pain, was such an individual. Over the course of her career, Pain not only wrote and produced radio features and radio dramas but was also a successful journalist and author. She translated her experience in radio production onto the st…

  • British radio drama and the avant-garde in the 1950s

Hugh Chignell•ARTICLE•Historical Journal Of Film Radio…•2017

The BBC in the 1950s was a conservative and cautious institution. British theatre was at the same time largely commercial and offered a glamourous distraction from wider social and political realities. During the decade, however, new avant-garde approaches to drama emerged, both on the stage and on radio. The avant-garde was particularly vibrant in Paris, where Samuel Beckett was beginning to challenge theatrical orthodoxies. Initially, managers …

  • BBC Radio News and Current Affairs and the Suez Crisis

    Hugh Chignell•ARTICLE•Media History•2013•References: 2

This article challenges some of the received opinion about the failings of BBC coverage of the Suez crisis. Using a novel focus on radio as opposed to television coverage, it aims to show that despite the factual nature of the radio news bulletins, they did succeed in representing some dissent towards the military action as well as provide evidence of the military build-up. Although the flagship radio current affairs programme, ‘At Home and Abroa…

  • BBC Radio Four’s Analysis and the Third Way

    Open Access•Hugh Chignell•ARTICLE•Media Culture & Society•2012•References: 2

BBC Radio Four’s current affairs programme Analysis provided a platform for Third Way ideas in 1994 and 1995. Key Third Way thinkers both contributed to and presented the programme, which repeated many of the core Third Way ideas. This willingness to intervene in a key ideological shift mirrored the programme’s enthusiastic treatment of neoliberalism in the mid 1970s. Then, editions of the programme presented by the influential Thatcherite, John …

    Hugh Chignell, John Devlin•ARTICLE•Radio Journal International…•2007•References: 1

Although widely regarded as the most influential British radio DJ of the last century, John Peel was also a presenter of speech radio. This article examines his career presenting two BBC Radio 4 speech programmes; ‘Offspring’ and ‘Home Truths’. Research carried out included interviews with radio producers, close listening to selected programmes presented by Peel as well as reviewing the literature on radio presentation and broadcast talk. Hugh Chignell•ARTICLE•Twentieth Century British History•2007

UK commercial radio was formally launched in October 1973 when LBC went on air. Its sister station, IRN, began providing a news service at the same time for the growing number of ‘Independent Local Radio’ stations. During the period 1973–1996 these two organisations assembled an archive of over 7,000 reel-to-reel tapes which now represent the largest commercial radio archive in Britain. For historians of the media, and of the twentieth century mo…

  • BBC Radio 4’s Analysis and Africa: How the flagship current affairs programme covered Africa in the 1970s and early 1980s

    Hugh Chignell•ARTICLE•Radio Journal International…•2003

BBC Radio 4’s Analysis was first broadcast in April 1970 and quickly established itself as the pre-eminent exponent of radio current affairs. This paper considers how Southern Africa was represented, in particular at two stages of the programme’s evolution, in the early 1970s and again a decade after that. Between 1971 and 1973 five programmes on Africa were presented by Ian McIntyre, a central figure in British current affairs broadcasting, who …
