Reframing mass tourism
Was mass tourism socially sustainable? To answer this question, we conducted oral history fieldwork focusing on the relationships between tourists and the local community. We interviewed tourists of different ages, professions, and geographical origins who spent their holidays on the Adriatic coast between the 1930s and the 1980s. The result is rather unexpected. The literature on mass tourism has generally developed conceptualisations that empha…
Exploring the current meaning of plaster face casts in museums
Among the different types of anthropological items that have been amassed over time for research and didactic purposes (e.g. identified human osteological series and anthropometric instruments), plaster face cast collections still enclose a sensitive nature when exposed in museums, being midway between objects and human remains, between scientific items and cultural heritage. The present work focuses on the plaster face casts stored at the Anthro…
Digital archives as a tool to strengthen tourism research
The essay aims to analyse the impact of the digital turn on tourism history in Italy by adopting a multifaceted approach and answering the basic research question of whether or not Italian tourism history has fully experienced the digital turn and what the consequences have been in terms of methods and contents. Our starting point is that the transformation we are facing is comparable to the invention of the printing press and the mass production…
Organizational change in the hospitality industry
The aim of this contribution is to develop an understanding of the trajectories and drivers of organizational change in small and medium hospitality enterprises from the 1920s to the 2010s, focusing on an Italian seaside destination that experienced an enduring success: Rimini. By conducting oral history fieldwork and integrating this with documentary evidence, we reconstructed the organizational models adopted by 42 entrepreneurs, which can be c…
The managerial transformation of Italian co-operative enterprises 1946–2010
The Italian co-operative enterprises have prospered in the last thirty years in various sectors. In this essay we analyze the role played by managerialization in allowing Italian co-ops to compete nationally and internationally with capitalist enterprises. On the basis of a substantial set of company histories and managers interviews, we have built a three generations model of co-ops managers, which shows the changes that have allowed co-ops to b…
The ‘Bel Paese’ and the transition to a service economy
The aim of the present essay is to reconstruct the development of the service sector, and to analyse the characteristics of the services, so as to provide an evaluation of the contribution they have made to Italy’s economic growth. \nItaly completed the transition to a service economy during the final twenty years of the twentieth century, following the development of personal and social services at first, and then of producer services thereafter…
The rise of a service-based economy and its transformation
This article examines the birth and development of Rimini's tourism district. We analyse the origins of the hoteliers in this Italian seaside resort and construct a database on the first wave of registered hoteliers (1929–1939) and on their social, geographic and economic background. We then investigate the transition from services to industry. The following sections analyse the influence of tourism growth and construction demand on the developme…
