Learning Spaces of Higher Education for Postdigital Citizens
Citizen science research is often interdisciplinary, responsive to public concerns and inclusive of community knowledge. It can also involve multiple voices coming together to address ‘wicked’ problems. In this paper, we introduce CmyView, a visual and creative methodology that is suitable for research projects in citizen science, particularly those focusing on learning spaces. CmyView’s conceptual framing is informed by research in embodied cogn…
Chatting with Dall-E in a Postdigital Architectural Classroom
Technological innovations, and most notably the use of GenAI, have increasingly become part of the contemporary architectural classroom. Alongside such developments, numerous ethical dilemmas have emerged, around the pedagogical and social organisation of the learning spaces, as well as questions around how such innovations are shaping student learning activity and outcomes. With a focus on using GenAI as a co-creator in teaching and learning, th…
Installing solar panels on heritage buildings
Rapid greenhouse gas emission reductions are necessary to limit climate change. Barriers to emission reductions must be addressed, including in the built environment, which is one of the largest contributors. An ordinary case where a resident erected solar panels (photovoltaics) on the roof of a house in a heritage area reveals how barriers to such initiatives arise. The local planning authority, despite supporting climate mitigation strategies, …
Materials and Places for Learning
People are more likely to thrive when they feel connected, when they feel they belong to a group, to a place, or when they feel part of a community. Places can play a powerful role in shaping one’s attachment to others and to institutions as part of the development of one’s identity. People’s experiences of places are linked to their sensorial impressions of material and digital elements, and to their perceptions of how multiple elements intercon…
Digital spectres
World Heritage is a profound expression of civilization. It connects the past with the present and the future. But the complexities and nuances for World Heritage in the new digital paradigm are not yet fully understood. While discourse on the affordances and limitations of social media for engaging with audiences has burgeoned in the past decade, the social and economic effects of search engines in the mediatization of heritage has largely gone …
Spaces of inclusion and belonging
Doctoral studies are often described as solitary and challenging endeavors, dependent on candidates’ highly developed skills, self-driven nature, and commitment to engage in years of research activity. A range of university initiatives are specially crafted to support higher research degree students, for example, through digital and physical resources, workshops, group gatherings, and others. Our project examines what constitutes significant plac…
Participatory Culture and the Social Value of an Architectural Icon
Photosharing on Flickr
This paper argues that Flickr, a popular ‘photosharing’ website, is facilitating new public engagements with world heritage sites like the Sydney Opera House. Australian heritage institutions (namely libraries and museums) have recently begun to employ Flickr as a site through which to engage communities with their photographic archives and collections. Yet Flickr is more than an ‘online photo album’: it is a social and cultural network generated…
