  • Between Anti-Islamic Sentiment and Liberal Secularism

Open Access•Kasper Ly Netterstrøm, Michał Matlak•ARTICLE•Journal of Church and State•2023

European Union (EU) institutions have sought to establish a dialogue and relationship with religious organizations in Europe since the 1990s, even though religion is officially a competence of the member states.1 This process has been studied from the point of view of both Christian organizations and European institutions.2 The rising importance for EU institutions regarding issues related to Islam has also been examined, as have the different fo…

  • Denial and Pragmatism

Kasper Ly Netterstrøm•ARTICLE•Journal of Religion in Europe•2021

From halal food to the veil, this article analyses the relationship between Islam and the Danish state. It finds a coexistence of two modes of dealing with Islam: an official approach dominated by denial of the existence of Islam within Danish society and an unwillingness to recognise Muslim religious practices; and a pragmatic approach, mostly found at the local level, that focuses on finding practical solutions. This article argues that the off…

The Tunisian General Labor Union (UGTT) played a major role in the 2010/11 Tunisian revolution and in the subsequent democratization process. This article seeks to explain why the union was capable of taking on this role in light of the fact that, before the revolution, it cooperated with and was heavily infiltrated by the regime of President Zine El-‘Abidine Ben ‘Ali. By describing the UGTT’s internal struggles during the dictatorship, the artic…

  • After the Arab Spring

    Open Access•Kasper Ly Netterstrøm•ARTICLE•Journal of democracy•2015•Cited by: 37•References: 3

By voting for Tunisia’s new constitution in January 2014, the Islamist party Ennahda accepted many principles that were in contradiction with Islamist ideology. Most importantly, the party accepted the principle of freedom of consciousness and the absence of a reference to Sharia. This paper argues that, contrary to many theories in the field, the Islamists conceded solely out of necessity. However, after the concessions the leadership of the par…
