Engineering professors as entrepreneurs: The case of Franz Reuleaux (1829–1905) and Alois Riedler (1850–1936)
Franz Reuleaux and Alois Riedler were probably the best known professors of mechanical engineering in late nineteenth century Germany. The country was becoming one of the world’s leading industrial countries, and Reuleaux and Riedler tried to contribute to this process. They obtained patents, founded their own companies, invested in both already existing and newly erected firms, and worked as consultants. In doing so, Reuleaux lost nearly all his…

John K. Brown did an excellent job with his article "Design Plans, Working Drawings, National Styles: Engineering Practice in Great Britain and the United States, 1775-1945" (April 2000). By comparing design and drafting in the American and British capital equipment industry, he made an important contribution to our understanding of the development of their respective engineering cultures. He concentrates on the existence of British "design creat…

Jahrhunderts
In Germany, numerous technical schools were established between 1821 and 1836. The main purpose of these schools was to supply public service and industry with technical personnel. Indeed, a great number among the graduates entered positions in mining, military, and public building. The public service's demands influenced the schools' organization and curricula. On the contrary, in the time period before 1870, only few graduates obtained position…
Science-Based Industry or Industry-Based Science? Electrical Engineering in Germany before World War I

The scientific institutionalization of electrical engineering took place in the 1880's; however, the science of electricity did not yet furnish proof of its practical efficiency. The founding of chairs in electrical engineering at this time was connected with the rise of heavy current industry, whereas weak current developments, as for instance telegraphy and telephony, played virtually no role. The principal connections of the discipline of elec…
Employment and Career Mobility of Women in France and the Federal Republic
Educational systems and labour markets as determinants of worklife mobility in France and West Germany: A Comparison of Men's Career Mobility, 1965-1970
Based on large national samples of male labour forces, the paper investigates differences in the amount and pattern of worklife mobility in France and Germany during the five year period 1965–70. The findings are compatible with the hypothesis of a dominantly organizational mobility space in France and a dominantly qualificational mobility space in Germany. In Germany, people are sorted into a narrow range of occupations and orderly career lines …

Multiple Exchange Rate Policies in Latin America
The persistence of trade and exchange controls in developing countries is of growing concern among economic circles and has been dealt with in recent discussions and papers, both published and unpublished. In Latin America exchange practices have severely tested the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which represents the prevailing ideology of a liberal international monetary policy. The principles and activities of this institution have tended t…
Die historische Funktion technisch‐wissenschaftlicher Zusammenarbeit
Das Quellenproblem in der Technikgeschichte: Informationsträger historischer Technik. Technikgeschichtliche Jahrestagung des Vereins Deutscher Ingenieure am 8. und 9. März 1982 in Düsseldorf
Ideology and practice of technology in history∗
First there is an outline of four types of 19th century theoretical thinking on technology in Germany: views of absolutism, economic liberalism, Catholic romanticism, and Marxism. On the other hand some historical examples of how technology was actually dealt with — e.g. machine‐breaking in the early 19th century — are given. Finally some points about attitudes and behaviour of man in reference to technology are set out. The main argument is that…
