  • Trabecular structure of the proximal and distal ulna in extant primates

    Open Access•G Raventós-Izard, M Cazenave et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2026

Trabecular bone (re)models in response to localized mechanical loading, potentially enabling inferences about the positional behavior of extinct taxa. However, the trabecular architecture of the ulna remains understudied in extant primates, particularly regarding whether it reflects habitual joint posture and loading. Across a broad sample of anthropoid primates, including apes, atelids, and cercopithecoids, we quantified the relative bone volume…

  • Ulnar morphology of Pliobates cataloniae (Pliopithecoidea)

    Open Access•G Raventós-Izard, Oriol Monclús-Gonzalo et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Evolution•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 70

Pliobates cataloniae is a small-bodied crouzeliid pliopithecoid from the Miocene (∼11.6 Ma) of Abocador de Can Mata (ACM; Vallès-Penedès Basin, NE Iberian Peninsula). It exhibits a mosaic of primitive (stem catarrhine) and derived (modern hominoid-like) postcranial features. The holotype partial skeleton, from locality ACM/C8-A4, includes an almost complete ulna-a bone that plays a critical role in forearm flexion-extension and pronation-supinati…

  • The radial head of the Middle Miocene ape Nacholapithecus kerioi

    Open Access•Júlia Arias-Martorell, Alessandro Urciuoli et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Evolution•2023•Cited by: 3•References: 49

  • A proximal radius of Barberapithecus huerzeleri from Castell de Barberà

    Open Access•Júlia Arias-Martorell, Sergio Almécija et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Evolution•2021•Cited by: 5•References: 88

  • Structural and molecular study of the supraspinatus muscle of modern humans ( Homo sapiens ) and common chimpanzees ( Pan troglodytes )

    Open Access•Josep M Potau, Aroa Casado et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2018•References: 28

OBJECTIVES: To analyze the muscle architecture and the expression pattern of the myosin heavy chain (MyHC) isoforms in the supraspinatus of Pan troglodytes and Homo sapiens in order to identify differences related to their different types of locomotion. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We have analyzed nine supraspinatus muscles of Pan troglodytes and ten of Homo sapiens. For each sample, we have recorded the muscle fascicle length (MFL), the pennation ang…

  • Shape analysis of the proximal humerus in orthograde and semi‐orthograde primates

    Open Access•Júlia Arias-Martorell, Julia Arias‐Martorell et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2015

"Suspensory locomotion" is an expression that encompasses a series of specialized forms of locomotion that mainly orthograde primates use to achieve below-branch traveling. It implies a number of features in the entire body associated with the use of the forelimb in overhead positions. The glenohumeral joint is one of the main joints involved in effective suspensory locomotion, being subject to a delicate balance between the high degree of mobili…

  • Morphological affinities of the proximal humerus of Epipliopithecus vindobonensis and Pliopithecus antiquus

    Open Access•Júlia Arias-Martorell, David M Alba et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Evolution•2015•Cited by: 10•References: 79

  • Brief communication

    Open Access•Júlia Arias-Martorell, Julia Arias‐Martorell et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2014•Cited by: 1•References: 38

The proximal humerus is formed by three secondary ossification centers during the postnatal trajectory of the human infant. The ossification centers later grow into the structures of the articular surface, major tubercle, and minor tubercle. There is a purported functional division between the articular surface and the tubercles, with the articular surface mainly responsible for the range of movement of the shoulder joint, and the tubercles beari…

  • A Comparison of Qualitative and Quantitative Methodological Approaches to Characterizing the Dorsal Side of the Scapula in Hominoidea and Its Relationship to Locomotion

Many osteological collections from museums and research institutions consist mainly of remains from captive‐bred animals. The restrictions related to the space of their enclosures and the nature of its substrate are likely to affect the locomotor and postural behaviors of captive‐bred animals, which are widely considered uninformative regarding bone morphology and anatomical adaptations of wild animals, especially so in the case of extant great a…
