  • The Omo-Turkana Basin fossil record as a milestone toward a comprehensive database of the hominin fossil record online

  • The hominin fossil record of the Omo-Turkana Basin

    Open Access•François Marchal, Denné N Reed et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Evolution•2025•References: 7

The Omo-Turkana Basin is one of three major regions for the study of hominin evolution in Africa. It has yielded a rich hominin fossil record of 1231 specimens, around a third of the record for the whole of Africa for the period from the Messinian through the Calabrian. Here, we consider the fossil hominin record of the Omo-Turkana Basin as an object of study in its own right and show the contribution that an analysis of such an exhaustive record…

Patrick Cuthbertson, Tobias Ullman et al.•PREPRINT•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 19

The area of the Inner Asian Mountain Corridor (IAMC) follows the foothills and piedmont zones around the northern limits of Asia’s interior mountains, connecting two important areas for human evolution: the Fergana valley and the Siberian Altai. Prior research has suggested the IAMC may have provided an area of connected refugia from harsh climates during the Pleistocene. To date, this region contains very few secure, dateable Pleistocene sites, …

  • Digital data collection in paleoanthropology

Open Access•Denné N Reed, Denné Reed et al.•ARTICLE•Evolutionary Anthropology Issues…•2015

Understanding patterns of human evolution across space and time requires synthesizing data collected by independent research teams, and this effort is part of a larger trend to develop cyber infrastructure and e‐science initiatives. At present, paleoanthropology cannot easily answer basic questions about the total number of fossils and artifacts that have been discovered, or exactly how those items were collected. In this paper, we examine the me…
