  • Geological controls on the preservation of fossils and archaeology in the islands of the Riau–Lingga Archipelago, Indonesia

Open Access•Julien Louys, Agus Tri Hascaryo et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Island and Coastal…•2026•References: 51

The Riau–Lingga Archipelago, situated south of Singapore and east of Sumatra, holds promise from a modeling perspective for the preservation of Homo erectus and other early archaeological material, as hominins traveled south to Island Southeast Asia. The islands in the archipelago are some of the only emergent lands of the now submerged Sunda Shelf, a region ecologically and geographically conducive for early hominin and faunal movements and occu…

  • Sumatran orangutan diets in the Late Pleistocene as inferred from dental microwear texture analysis

Open Access•Julien Louys, Yahdi Zaim et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2021

  • Taxonomy, taphonomy and chronology of the Pleistocene faunal assemblage at Ngalau Gupin cave, Sumatra

    Open Access•Holly E Smith, Gilbert J Price et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2021

Ngalau Gupin is a broad karstic cave system in the Padang Highlands of western Sumatra, Indonesia. Abundant fossils, consisting of mostly isolated teeth from small-to large-sized animals, were recovered from breccias cemented on the cave walls and unconsolidated sediments on the cave floor. Two loci on the walls and floors of Ngalau Gupin, named NG-A and NG-B respectively, are studied. We determine that NG-B most likely formed as a result of the …

  • New Chronological Constraints for the Late Pleistocene Fossil Assemblage and Associated Breccia from Ngalau Sampit, Sumatra

    Open Access•M Duval, Kira Westaway et al.•ARTICLE•Open Quaternary•2021•Cited by: 4•References: 43

We provide the first numerical age constraints for the palaeontological assemblage and associated sediment from Ngalau Sampit, Sumatra, one of M. Eugène F.T. Dubois’ noted sites that he excavated in 1889, and of which we present a transcript of his unpublished report. A combination of U-series, Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) and Luminescence (pIR-IRSL) methods was employed. The three tooth samples yield 1σ consistent combined U-series/ESR ages (me…

  • New 1.5 million-year-old Homo erectus maxilla from Sangiran (Central Java, Indonesia)

Open Access•Yahdi Zaim, Russell L Ciochon et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Evolution•2011

  • New reconstruction and morphological description of a Homo erectus cranium: Skull IX (Tjg-1993.05) from Sangiran, Central Java

Open Access•Yousuke Kaifu, Yahdi Zaim et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Evolution•2011•Cited by: 18•References: 62

  • Way out of Africa: Early Pleistocene paleoenvironments inhabited by Homo erectus in Sangiran, Java

  • Early Pleistocene 40 Ar/ 39 Ar ages for Bapang Formation hominins, Central Jawa, Indonesia

Open Access•Roy Larick, Russell L Ciochon et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the National…•2001

The Sangiran dome is the primary stratigraphic window for the Plio-Pleistocene deposits of the Solo basin of Central Jawa. The dome has yielded nearly 80 Homo erectus fossils, around 50 of which have known findspots. With a hornblende 40 Ar/ 39 Ar plateau age of 1.66 ± 0.04 mega-annum (Ma) reportedly associated with two fossils [Swisher, C.C., III, Curtis, G. H., Jacob, T., Getty, A. G., Suprijo, A. & Widiasmoro (1994) Science 263, 1118–1121), th…
