  • Individual isotopic niche variation of herbivores and palaeoenvironmental reconstruction of the Mid-Pleistocene Site of Kathu Pan 1 (South Africa)

    Open Access•Daryl Codron, Nyebe E Mohale et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Science Advances•2024•Citada por: 1•Referências: 15

Individual niche variation occurs when individuals within a population adopt unique behavioural or ecological traits, giving the population a distinct niche structure. Although widespread amongst natural populations, most of niche theory and its applications in ecological and palaeoenvironmental contexts remains focused on species level patterns, treating variation within the population as noise. Using serial stable isotope profiles sampled along…

The fossil locality is situated on the farm “Uitzoek” in the Schoonspruit valley, near the town of Cornelia in the northeastern Free State Province of South Africa (Figures 12.1 and 12.2). The site consists of fossil-bearing valley-fill deposits within the Schoonspruit Valley. The hominin fossil and bulk of the fossil and artifact-bearing deposits of the site are dated by paleomagnetism to between 1.07 and 1.01 Ma (ages updated with respect to re…

Open Access•Matt Sponheimer, Daryl Codron et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2009•Citada por: 9•Referências: 75

Stable isotope analysis can be used to document dietary changes within the lifetimes of individuals and may prove useful for investigating fallback food consumption in modern, historical, and ancient primates. Feces, hair, and enamel are all suitable materials for such analysis, and each has its own benefits and limitations. Feces provide highly resolved temporal dietary data, but are generally limited to providing dietary information about moder…

    Open Access•Daryl Codron, J A Lee‐thorp et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2006•Citada por: 17•Referências: 40

Baboons are dietary generalists, consuming a wide range of food items in varying proportions. It is thus difficult to quantify and explain the dietary behavior of these primates. We present stable carbon (δ 13 C) and nitrogen (δ 15 N) isotopic data, and percentage nitrogen (%N), of feces from chacma baboons ( Papio ursinus ) living in two savanna environments of South Africa: the mountainous Waterberg region and the low‐lying Kruger National Park…
