  • Spatio-temporal variations of climate along possible African-Arabian routes of H. sapiens expansion

    Open Access•Markus L Fischer, Philipp Munz et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Science Advances•2024•Cited by: 2•References: 34

Eastern Africa and Arabia were major hominin hotspots and critical crossroads for migrating towards Asia during the late Pleistocene. To decipher the role of spatiotemporal environmental change on human occupation and migration patterns, we remeasured the marine core from Meteor Site KL 15 in the Gulf of Aden and reanalyzed its data together with the aridity index from ICDP Site Chew Bahir in eastern Africa and the wet-dry index from ODP Site 967…

  • Mid-Pleistocene volcano-tectonic fragmentation of the Turkana-Suguta Megalake

Annett Junginger, Simon Kübler et al.•PREPRINT•2023

The East African Rift System (EARS) is a key location for studying Plio-Pleistocene paleoclimate and hominin inhabitance. The region experienced profound reorganization during this interval as a response to volcanism, tectonics and climate change, and arguably detailed spatiotemporally coherent climate datasets could provide evidence of causal links between geologic change and hominin evolution. However, continued tectonism, erosion, burial and v…

  • Paleo-Enso influence on African environmentsand early modern humans

    Stefanie Kaboth‐bahr, William D Gosling et al.•PREPRINT•2022•Cited by: 1

lt;p>In this study, we synthesize terrestrial and marine proxy records, spanning the past 620,000 years, to decipher pan-African climate variability and its drivers and potential linkages to hominin evolution. We find a tight correlation between moisture availability across Africa to El Niño Southern Ocean oscillation (ENSO) variability, a manifestation of the Walker Circulation, that was most likely driven by changes in Earth’s eccentricity. Our…

  • Abrupt or gradual? Change point analysis of the late Pleistocene–Holocene climate record from Chew Bahir, southern Ethiopia

    Open Access•Martin H Trauth, Verena Foerster et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2018

We used a change point analysis on a late Pleistocene–Holocene lake-sediment record from the Chew Bahir basin in the southern Ethiopian Rift to determine the amplitude and duration of past climate transitions. The most dramatic changes occurred over 240 yr (from ~15,700 to 15,460 yr) during the onset of the African Humid Period (AHP), and over 990 yr (from ~4875 to 3885 yr) during its protracted termination. The AHP was interrupted by a distinct …

    Open Access•Marius J Walter, Martin H Trauth•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Evolution•2013•Cited by: 2•References: 19

  • Climatic change recorded in the sediments of the Chew Bahir basin, southern Ethiopia, during the last 45,000 years
