  • Seasonal hunting for red colobus monkeys by Mahale chimpanzees

Open Access•Kazuhiko Hosaka, Michio Nakamura et al.•ARTICLE•Pan Africa News•2024

With the spread of red colobus hunting by Mahale chimpanzees after the 1990s, hunting became more concentrated from August to October when the party size of chimpanzees increased. In particular, infant red colobus monkeys seemed to be caught more frequently from July to September compared to other age-group prey

  • Male chimpanzee age affects red colobus monkey hunting success

Open Access•Kazuhiko Hosaka, Michio Nakamura et al.•ARTICLE•Pan Africa News•2024

We used data collected from 1976 to 2010 in Mahale, Tanzania, to explore longitudinal changes in red colobus hunting throughout the life histories of individual male chimpanzees. The relative frequency (z-scores) of successful red colobus hunts by male chimpanzees exhibited an inverted U-shaped distribution with age. Hunting success increases when males are between 8–20 years old. Males in adulthood (20–35 years of age) made the highest number of…

  • My studies of primates

    Open Access•Yukio Takahata•ARTICLE•Primates•2023

In this essay, I summarize my research career, with reference to the early days of the Laboratory of Physical Anthropology (LPA) at Kyoto University led by Kinji Imanishi and Junichiro Itani. When I started conducting research on the sexual behavior of Japanese macaques in 1975, I made some unexpected observations. High-ranking males did not obtain high mating success. Estrous females often rejected the courtships of high-ranking males and chose …

  • Ranging patterns of Japanese macaques in the coniferous forest of Yakushima

Open Access•Goro Hanya, Shinichi Yoshihiro et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2020

Ranging is one of the most important behavioral adaptations for coping with seasonally fluctuating food and thermal conditions. We studied the ranging patterns, in particular home range shift and travel rate of Japanese macaques ( Macaca fuscata ) in the coniferous forest of Yakushima by tracking a group for 17 months. We also supplemented our data with records collected every August over a 5‐year annual census. The macaque group used the eastern…

  • Home ranges of ring-tailed lemur troops and the density of large trees at Berenty Reserve, Madagascar

Open Access•Naoki Koyama, Takayo SOMA et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of African Studies•2005

At Berenty Reserve, Madagascar, we have set up a main study area of 14.2 ha to study the demographic changes of ring-tailed lemurs for 11 years from 1989 to 2000. We also have set up a broader study area of 30.4 ha to study the environmental changes, including the main study area. In the main study area, due to the social changes such as troop divisions and evictions, the number of troops increased from three to six. Consequently, home range size…

  • Comparisons of food availability and group density of Japanese macaques in primary, naturally regenerated, and plantation forests

Open Access•Goro Hanya, Koichiro Zamma et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2005

We compared food availability and group density of Japanese macaques in Yakushima, southern Japan, among primary forest and two habitats that had been disturbed by logging and had different regeneration histories. The study was conducted in an undisturbed national park, forest that was logged 7–18 years ago and later naturally regenerated, and forest that was logged 19–27 years ago and later planted with Japanese cedar ( Cryptomeria japonica ) tr…

  • New method to census primate groups

Open Access•Goro Hanya, Shinichi Yoshihiro et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2003

We devised a new method to estimate the density of primate groups in habitats that preclude the use of a line‐transect census because the ground is too steep. We combined point census and group follows. From the number of groups counted at a fixed point for an hour, n , group density D was calculated: $D = {{\lambda n} \over \pi}$ . λ, the detectability constant, was a constant when distance‐dependent detectability g ( y ) was regressed on a half…

  • Group Extinction and Female Transfer in Wild Chimpanzees in the Mahale National Park, Tanzania

    Open Access•Toshisada Nishida, Mariko Hiraiwa‐hasegawa et al.•ARTICLE•Zeitschrift für Tierpsychologie•1985

and Summary A unit‐group (K‐group) of chimpanzees has shown a drastic demographic change in the course of 17 years (1966–1983) of field study. K‐group had 6 adult males in 1966. Initially, the group lost adult males one by one between 1969–1975. The number of adult males in the unit‐group was the main factor influencing the immigration of strange, cycling females and the emigration of cycling females, although nulliparous females born into K‐grou…

  • Troop extinction and fusion in wild Japanese macaques of Yakushima Island, Japan

Open Access•Yukio Takahata, Shigeru Suzuki et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•1994

A wild Japanese macaque troop decreased in size because the birth rate dropped and infant mortality increased. In the 1989 mating season, the last male left the troop, and the remaining two females joined a neighboring troop. Thus, the troop ceased to exist as an independent troop. A lower limit to troop size may exist, below which a troop cannot effectively defend its range, forcing the females to join a larger troop. © 1994 Wiley‐Liss, Inc
