Orangutan behavior in Kutai National Park after drought and fire damage: Adjustments to short‐ and long‐term natural forest regeneration
This study aimed to develop a long-term picture of orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus morio) behavioral adjustments to damaged masting forest around Mentoko, Kutai National Park, Indonesia. Mentoko is regenerating from two severe burnings and is one of few areas where orangutans were well-studied before and early after damage. We studied orangutans' feeding ecology, diet, and activity budgets 12-15 years after the second burning then compared our findings…
Social Learning Opportunities in Captive Orangutans (Pongo abelii) and Mandrills (Mandrillus sphinx)
Primate Tourism: A Tool for Conservation
Primate tourism is a growing phenomenon, with increasing pressure coming from several directions: the private sector, governments, and conservation agencies. At the same time, some primate sites are working to exclude or severely restrict tourism because of problems that have developed as a result. Indeed, tourism has proven costly to primates due to factors such as disease, stress, social disruption, vulnerability to poachers, and interference w…
Orangutan fish eating, primate aquatic fauna eating, and their implications for the origins of ancestral hominin fish eating
Factors affecting reproduction in rehabilitant female orangutans: Young age at first birth and short inter-birth interval
Between Culture and Biology: Perspectives on Ontogenetic Development
Between Culture and Biology breaks away from the traditional nature/nurture dialectic and brings together biological, psychological and cultural perspectives on development. In this thought-provoking book, the argument is put forward that the biological bases of behaviour and cultural context should be approached in an integrated fashion to properly understand ontogenetic development and that both the cultural and biological demain provide constr…
Introduction: Cognitive Approaches to Great Ape Conservation
Return of the Native: Cognition and Site-Specific Expertise in Orangutan Rehabilitation
The nature and evolution of intelligence in orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus)
Learning by imitation: A hierarchical approach
To explain social learning without invoking the cognitively complex concept of imitation, many learning mechanisms have been proposed. Borrowing an idea used routinely in cognitive psychology, we argue that most of these alternatives can be subsumed under a single process, priming, in which input increases the activation of stored internal representations. Imitation itself has generally been seen as a “special faculty.” This has diverted much res…
Reaching into Thought: The Minds of the Great Apes
Direct caregiver intervention in infant peer social encounters
The extent and nature of direct caregiver intervention in peer social encounters among 12 infants were studied in a day care setting. Interventions were common, with almost half of them solicited by the infants; they tended to concentrate on problematic exchanges and to ignore positive ones; and they appeared to be aimed at fairness and the shaping of acceptable peer behavior. Implications for models of peer social development, for the interdepen…
