Migration and mobility in Roman Beirut
Rescue excavations in Beirut, Lebanon, have uncovered large burial assemblages dating to the Roman period. As the first Roman colony in the Near East, the human skeletons from Beirut provide a unique opportunity to explore migration to the city using biomolecular analyses. This study applies strontium and oxygen isotope analysis to nineteen human skeletons and establishes primary local reference values through the analysis of human and faunal den…
The protohistoric briquetage at Puntone (Tuscany, Italy)
While processes involved in the protohistoric briquetage at Puntone (Tuscany, Italy) have been reconstructed in detail, the age of this industry remained uncertain since materials suited for traditional dating (14C dating on charcoal and typological dating of ceramics) were very scarce. We attempted to assess its age by radiocarbon dating organic matter and carbonates in strata that were directly linked to the industry. Microbial DNA and C isotop…
An Independent Assessment of Uncertainty for Radiocarbon Analysis With the New Generation High-Yield Accelerator Mass Spectrometers
The radiocarbon ( 14 C) dating facility at the Centre for Isotope Research, University of Groningen went through a major upgrade in 2017 and this included installation of a MICADAS accelerator mass spectrometer (AMS). In the first 18 months, we performed 4000 sample and 3000 reference measurements. A careful evaluation of those measurement results is presented, to characterize the various sources of uncertainty and to ultimately assign, for every…
Dating the funerary use of caves in Liguria (northwestern Italy) from the Neolithic to historic times
Radiocarbon Dating at Groningen
The Centre for Isotope Research (CIO) at the University of Groningen has operated a radiocarbon ( 14 C) dating laboratory for almost 70 years. In 2017, the CIO received a major upgrade, which involved the relocation of the laboratory to new purpose-built premises, and the installation of a MICADAS accelerator mass spectrometer. This period of transition provides an opportunity to update the laboratory’s routine procedures. This article addresses …
Radiocarbon Dating Cremated Bone
Radiocarbon ( 14 C) results on cremated bone are frequently published in high-ranking journals, but 14 C laboratories employ different pretreatment methods as they have divergent perceptions of what sources of contaminants might be present. We found pretreatment protocols to vary significantly between three laboratories (Brussels [RICH], Kiel [KIA], and Groningen [CIO]), which all have a long history of dating cremated bone. We present a case stu…
Three Years of Δ 14 CO 2 Observations from Maize Leaves in the Netherlands and Western Europe
Atmospheric Δ 14 CO 2 measurements are useful to investigate the regional signals of anthropogenic CO 2 emissions, despite the currently scarce observational network for Δ 14 CO 2 . Plant samples are an easily attainable alternative, which have been shown to work well as a qualitative measure of the atmospheric Δ 14 CO 2 signals integrated over the time a plant has grown. Here, we present the 14 C analysis results for 89 individual maize ( Zea ma…

Biogenic Carbon Fraction of Biogas and Natural Gas Fuel Mixtures Determined with 14 C
This study investigates the accuracy of the radiocarbon-based calculation of the biogenic carbon fraction for different biogas and biofossil gas mixtures. The focus is on the uncertainty in the 14 C reference values for 100% biogenic carbon and on the 13 C-based isotope fractionation correction of the measured 14 C values. The separately (AMS) measured CO 2 and CH 4 fractions of 8 different biogas samples showed 14 C values between 102‰ and 116% …
Initial Results of an Intercomparison of AMS-Based Atmospheric 14 CO 2 Measurements
This article presents results from the first 3 rounds of an international intercomparison of measurements of Δ 14 CO 2 in liter-scale samples of whole air by groups using accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS). The ultimate goal of the intercomparison is to allow the merging of Δ 14 CO 2 data from different groups, with the confidence that differences in the data are geophysical gradients and not artifacts of calibration. Eight groups have participa…
