  • Bone retouchers and end-scrapers side by side at Bushman Rock Shelter: Exploring a ca. 100,000-year-old technological imbrication in southern Africa

Open Access•A Val, Chantal Tribolo et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Evolution•2026

A growing body of archaeological data points towards distinct cultural innovations during Marine Isotopic Stage (MIS) 5 in Africa. At Bushman Rock Shelter in South Africa, we described previously a large corpus of end-scrapers that constitute a technological novelty in the context of MIS 5 developments. Here, we describe 25 bones with impressions collected from the same deposits. Middle Stone Age layers at the site represent a succession of disti…

Here, we reconstruct Neanderthals’ hunting grounds within three distinct habitats using dental microwear analysis combined with zooarchaeological data. The predation patterns toward ungulates are discussed in term of frequency (NISP/MNI) and potential meat intake (MAM). Unit IIIa of Teixoneres Cave (MIS 3, …

In southern Africa, key technologies and symbolic behaviors develop as early as the later Middle Stone Age in MIS5. These innovations arise independently in various places, contexts and forms, until their full expression during the Still Bay and the Howiesons Poort. The Middle Stone Age sequence from Diepkloof Rock Shelter, on the West Coast of the region, preserves archaeological proxies that help unravelling the cultural processes at work. This…

    Open Access•Pierre-Jean Texier, Guillaume Porraz•ARTICLE•Palethnologie•2013

Diepkloof rock shelter is a large quartzitic sandstone shelter (250 m2) located around 200 km north of Cape Town (Western Cape). It overlooks the Verlorenvlei River at 14 km from its mouth on the edge of its current shore. Excavations conducted since 1999 have gradually exposed one of the most complete archaeological sequences of the Middle Stone Age in southern Africa. A section nearly 4 m deep shows for the first time a continuous sequence of P…

Open Access•Laure Dayet, Floréal Daniel et al.•ARTICLE•Open Journal of Archaeometry•2013•References: 12

A number of ochre pieces were found from the Middle Stone Age (MSA) in southern Africa, leading to recent debates about the use of this material. The relevant question behind such a debate lies in the role of ochre in early modern human societies. Technical, socio-economical and symbolic aspects might be associated with ochre processing and use. Ochre pieces showing signs of use-wear found on MSA sites are the main witnesses of such activities. T…

Cette méthode, appliquée à l’étude du matériel anthracologique du site moustérien de la Combette (Bonnieux, Vaucluse), a permis de mettre en évidence une utilisation quasi exclusive du bois mort pendant toutes les phases d’occupation du site.
