  • Reading disease in bone: Bioarchaeological and molecular perspectives on skeletal pathology in a human skeleton from side (Turkiye)

Open Access•Büşra Karataş, Alper Yener YAVUZ et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropologiai Közlemények•2026

Background: Tuberculosis has profoundly shaped human history, but skeletal diagnosis alone is often limited by non-specific lesions and preservation issues. Biomolecular methods therefore provide valuable complementary evidence for detecting tuberculosis in archaeological human remains. Objective: This study investigates pathological changes observed in a human skeleton excavated from the ancient city of Side (Antalya, Turkiye) and dated to the B…

  • An Unusual Pairing: Earliest Evidence of Fusion Between a Mandibular Third Molar and Distomolar in Türkiye

Open Access•Erin Blankenship-Sefczek, Alper Yener YAVUZ et al.•ARTICLE•Dental Anthropology Journal•2026

The presence of supernumerary and fused teeth are each rare dental anomalies in past and present populations. This study provides evidence of the co-occurrence of these two dental anomalies in an ancient Turkish population and contextualize them within the prevalences reported through time in this region. A male individual from the Tepecik settlement in the modern Antalya Province shows an erupted, fully-developed (supplementary) permanent distom…

  • First Detailed Examination of Macaca (Primates, Cercopithecidae) Remains From Roman Anatolia

Open Access•Ahmet Ihsan Aytek, Alper Yener YAVUZ•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2026

Primates are rare faunal components in zooarchaeological studies worldwide. In this study, we present the presence of a primate in a Roman‐period tomb in Attaleia (modern‐day Antalya). An almost complete cranium with maxillary teeth was examined, and dental measurements were taken. A large comparative material was used for taxonomic determination. Our detailed morphological and metric analyses suggest that the primate cranium belongs to the genus…

  • Virtual reconstruction and geometric morphometric analysis of the Kocabaş hominin fossil from Turkey: Implications for taxonomy and evolutionary significance

Open Access•T Mori, Alessandro Riga et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Evolution•2024•Cited by: 2•References: 80

The Kocabaş specimen comes from a travertine quarry near the homonymous village in the Denizli basin (Turkey). The specimen comprises three main fragments: portions of the right and left parietal and left and right parts of the frontal bone. The fossil was assumed to belong to the Homo erectus s.l. hypodigm by some authors, whereas others see similarities with Middle Pleistocene fossils (Broken Hill 1/Kabwe, Bodo, or Ceprano). Here, we present th…

  • Differential diagnosis of an osseous cranial tumor from Hellenistic Muğla, Turkey

Open Access•Elizabeth A Bews, Ahmet Ihsan Aytek et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2023

OBJECTIVE: This project evaluates a cranial lesion from a Hellenistic-era individual excavated by the Muğla Archaeological Museum in Gülağzı, Turkey. MATERIALS: An osseous tumor measuring 3.02 × 3.54 × 2.98 cm originating from the occipital bone of a probable young adult male. METHODS: The tumor was examined using gross morphological inspection, plain radiography (x-ray), and computed tomography (CT) imaging to identify potential differential dia…

  • Big cats from prehistoric İzmir: A paleontological approach to zooarchaeological material

  • Myndos nekropol iskeletlerinin paleoantropolojik analizi ve bir savaşçı mezarı

Open Access•Ahmet Ihsan Aytek, Alper Yener YAVUZ et al.•ARTICLE•Antropoloji•2021

Bodrum Yarımadası’nın batısında, Gümüşlük Beldesi sınırları içinde yer alan Myndos Antik Kenti, antik dönemde yoğun olarak kullanılan iki korunaklı doğal limana sahiptir. MÖ 4. yüzyıldan MS 4. yüzyıla kadar kullanıldığı bilinen nekropol alanında Bodrum Müzesi tarafından gerçekleştirilen kazı çalışmalarında tespit edilen 96 mezar içerisinde, 89 bireye ait iskeletler tespit edilmiştir. İskeletler üzerinde yapılan antropolojik incelemede 73 yetişkin…

  • Tefenni Kurtarma Kazısından Çıkan İskeletlerin Antropolojik Analizi ve Bir Kafatası Deformasyonu Örneği

Open Access•Ahmet Ihsan Aytek, Alper Yener YAVUZ et al.•ARTICLE•Antropoloji•2020

  • Skeletal System Problems in Anthropology, Archaeology and Art History Professionals

    Open Access•Ahmet Ihsan Aytek•ARTICLE•Antropoloji•2019

Anatolia has been settled by numerous civilizations and many excavations uncover the traces of these civilizations. Excavation is a hard labor and some part of this hard work are performed by anthropologists, archaeologists and art historians. This can affect the skeletal systems of the workers after a long period of labor in excavations. In order to see wheteher physical activity has an effect, a survey was designed. The aim of the study is to r…
