We the elite, they the people: Educational identity and perceived polarisation
The importance of education in the ‘schooled society’ leads to expectations of strong educational polarisation. Although the claim of educational polarisation receives little scientific support, this phenomenon still seems to be subjectively perceived. The social identity theory predicts that these perceptions are especially strong among the higher educated compared to the lower educated, due to their more powerful educational identity, and that …

Opponents, not enemies: Disentangling the relationship between polarization and democracy in Europe
Contradicting claims exist about the extent to which identity-based ideological polarization is eroding or improving democracy. We address this ambiguity by disentangling different forms of polarization (i.e., elite, partisan, societal) and the irrelationship with different aspects of democracy (i.e., quality, diffuse support, specific support). Based on the agonistic pluralism theory, we argue that democracy benefits from political conflict betw…

Are we in this together? Changes in anti-immigrant sentiments during the Covid-19 pandemic
The COVID-19 pandemic is posing a threat to people all across the globe. According to traditional literature, threat perceptions induce anti-immigrant sentiments, as ingroup identity and self-interest are strengthened at the expense of the outgroup. In this study, we investigate whether the COVID-19 pandemic indeed increases anti-immigrant sentiments, or that this type of threat elicits other or no group related responses. We also look at whether…
Roomies for Life? An Assessment of How Staying with a Local Facilitates Refugee Integration
In light of failing integration policies and practices, we provide a qualitative evaluation of a social innovation that aims to facilitate integration by providing refugees an opportunity to reside temporarily with locals. Our analysis of the experiences shared by refugee guests and local hosts provides insight on the theory and practice of refugee integration in three ways: we (1) inform research and policy on the effectiveness of staying with a…

Stability or change of public opinion and values during the coronavirus crisis? Exploring Dutch longitudinal panel data
Some participants of the public debate have argued that the world before and after the coronavirus crisis will look fundamentally different. An underlying assumption is that this crisis will alter public opinion in such a way that it leads to profound societal and political change. Scholarship suggests that while some policy preferences are quite volatile and prone to change under the influence of crises, core values formed during childhood are l…
Seksueel-ethische permissiviteit: Trends in Nederland 1981-2017
In this study, we explore trends in sexual-ethical permissiveness in the Netherlands during the last decades. Using Dutch data from the European Values Study (1981-2017), we show that tolerance towards homosexuality, abortion, divorce, euthanasia, and suicide increased in this period. About a third of this trend can be explained by cohort replacement: because younger, more permissive cohorts slowly replace older, less permissive cohorts, the mora…
