  • A first look at the coverage of Afghan evacuee resettlement in eight U.S. community newspapers

    Open Access•Bimbisar Irom, Tania Nachrin•ARTICLE•Journalism•2026

The study examines local newspaper coverage of Afghan resettlement in the U.S. after the end of America’s ‘longest war’ in 2021. The papers are prominent news outlets of the counties where the military bases housing evacuees are located. We use a mixed-methods approach to examine news articles collected over an eighteen-month period. The study will analyze prominent sources, characteristics of evacuees, and themes in coverage. Themes were derived…

  • Virtual Reality Experiences on Motivation to Seek Information of Refugees: Moderating Effects of Prejudice and Religiosity

Yoon Joo Lee, Porismita Borah et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Intercultural…•2026

Using an experimental design, the current study explored the relationship between religiosity, prejudice towards refugees, and Virtual Reality (VR) in evoking sympathy, leading to information-seeking intentions about refugees. Results showed that less religious participants with a positive view of refugees felt heightened sympathy via VR. Conversely, highly religious individuals with low positive refugee perceptions found VR more sympathetic than…

  • Pitfalls to countering disinformation: Analyzing local newspaper response to the ‘Syrian refugee rape case’ in Twin Falls, Idaho

    Bimbisar Irom•ARTICLE•The Communication Review•2024

The paper examines the local newspaper’s response to the “Syrian refugee rape case” disinformation campaign in Twin Falls, Idaho, 2016. Drawing upon the pervasive climate of fear surrounding Syrian refugees that followed the 2015 terrorist attacks in Paris, the disinformation campaign targeted refugee resettlement efforts in the city. The study employs a critical thematic analysis of prominent journalistic techniques deployed by the paper and the…

  • VR technology and humanitarian crisis: Political ideology and the intention to donate in the case of the Syrian refugee crisis

    Open Access•Porismita Borah, Bimbisar Irom et al.•ARTICLE•New Media & Society•2024•References: 6

Scholars have studied the role of technology in humanitarian crises and have noted an increase in positive attitudes and behavior. Of interest to us is Virtual Reality (VR). We set out to understand the role of VR technology and its relationships with empathy, sympathy, and donation intention in case of the Syrian refugee crisis. We conducted two experimental studies to examine these relationships, where participants watched “Clouds Over Sidra” a…

  • From media to hypermedia: Journalistic representations of Rohingya refugees and humanitarian communication

    Open Access•Bimbisar Irom, Stephanie Gibbons•ARTICLE•Journalism•2023

The paper is a comparative analysis of two media artifacts from Reuters engaging with the ongoing Rohingya refugee crisis. One artifact are the ‘traditional’ images that won the Pulitzer Prize in 2018; the second is a special report utilising several aspects of new media. Locating the artifacts within humanitarian journalism, the analysis seeks to understand whether emergent media has pronounced gains over traditional media. The study argues that…

  • The Rohingya Refugee Crisis: A Social Semiotic Study of Visuals in The New York Times and The Washington Post

Open Access•Bimbisar Irom, Porismita Borah et al.•ARTICLE•Journalism & Mass Communication…•2023

In this social semiotic analysis, we examined visuals of Rohingya refugees in two U.S. newspapers: The New York Times and The Washington Post. We identified prominent tropes and themes exemplifying those tropes. Visuals connoted refugee vulnerability and subscribed to gender stereotypes. Media also leaned on familiar themes to translate “distant suffering.” Our study has addressed the urgent need to bridge academic/critical work on journalism and…

  • Visual themes and frames of the Rohingya crisis: Newspaper content from three countries neighboring Myanmar

    Open Access•Bimbisar Irom•ARTICLE•Visual Communication•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 35

The ongoing Rohingya refugee crisis that originated in Myanmar has displaced over a million people since the 1990s (UNHCR, nd, ‘Rohingya refugee emergency at a glance’). This article examines visuals of Rohingya refugees from the latest round of violence beginning August 2017 that has led to the exodus of nearly 750,000 refugees to countries in South and Southeast Asia. Images are from reliable newspapers of three countries in that region. The st…

  • Visual Framing of the Rohingya Refugees: A Comparative Examination from Newspapers in four Countries

Bimbisar Irom, Porismita Borah et al.•ARTICLE•Visual Communication Quarterly•2022

Media depictions of refugees play a significant role in determining public attitudes toward policies and dispensation of aid. Given this centrality, the study analyzes prominent visual frames of the Rohingya refugee crisis in newspapers from Pakistan, Bangladesh, the United States, and Canada. We also examine the frames qualitatively. Findings show that overall coverage tended to focus on negative aspects by highlighting refugees’ vast numbers, v…

  • You are a disgrace and traitor to our country”: Incivility against “The Squad” on Twitter

    Open Access•Porismita Borah, Kate Keib et al.•ARTICLE•Internet Research•2022•Cited by: 3•References: 9

Purpose For many, the sole source for news content is social media, where passionate opinions are posted at an alarming speed. These opinions can cross the line from differing opinions shared in a public forum onto uncivil dialogue and even hate speech. Such online discourse threatens democratic values and creates a hostile environment. The purpose of this paper is to examine such incivility using the case of four congresswomen known as “The Squa…

  • Virtual reality and celebrity humanitarianism: Rashida Jones in Lebanon

    Open Access•Bimbisar Irom•ARTICLE•Media Culture & Society•2022•References: 71

The paper brings together two segments of contemporary humanitarian practice – celebrity advocacy and virtual reality (VR) – in order to more fully comprehend the relationship between emergent technologies and humanitarian advocacy efforts. Numerous VR documentaries intended to immerse audiences into the full experience of “distant suffering” have been crafted for audiences in the global North. Between 2015 and 2019, the United Nations invested i…

The study examines prominent news frames, sources, and refugee characteristics present in coverage of the under-reported Rohingya refugee crisis across newspapers from four nations. Findings show victim, thematic, and administrative frames were most commonly used. Politicians, international organizations, and NGOs were dominant sources, while nationality, age, and gender were frequently used refugee characteristics. Findings suggest positive prac…

Porismita Borah, Bimbisar Irom et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Youth Studies•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 12

Social media platforms that are full of misinformation and conspiracy theories about the COVID-19 pandemic can have an adverse impact on young adults. Young adults are going through critical changes in their lives due to the pandemic including educational challenges, uncertainties in employment, changes in routines, and loss of security and safety. Yet another challenge during this time is the uncertainty and the exposure to massive amount of mis…

  • To Donate or Not To Donate: Visual Framing of the Rohingya Refugees, Attitude Towards Refugees and Donation Intentions

    Open Access•Porismita Borah, Bimbisar Irom•ARTICLE•Journal of Refugee Studies•2021•Cited by: 4•References: 23

Visual representations of refugees likely have a determinative function in the ways policies are written and aid is dispensed for crises resolution efforts. We use theoretical concepts from the visual framing literature and two studies—a content analysis and an experiment—to examine the effects of six visual frames. We study the content of newspapers from four countries for the following visual frames: ‘individual’, ‘massified’, ‘mother and child…

  • Mediating Syria’s Strangers Through Levinas: Communication Ethics and the Visuals of Children

    Open Access•Bimbisar Irom•ARTICLE•Communication Theory•2019•References: 8

This paper investigates how the visuals of two children affected by the Syrian conflict, Alan Kurdi and Omran Daqneesh, circulate within the humanitarian imaginary. I argue that these communication artifacts offer us an opportunity to explore the links between two areas not often thought of in conjunction: ethical theory and mediation. The goal is to contribute to our understanding of the relationships between communication ethics and the mediate…

  • Towards a Worldly Post-9/11 American Novel: Transnational Disjunctures in Joseph O’Neill’s Netherland

    Open Access•Bimbisar Irom•ARTICLE•Journal of Transnational American…•2016•References: 14

This paper traces possible responses to the mutations in US state power after 9/11 by analyzing the worldly and transnational gestures of the post-9/11 American novel. Irom maps how post-9/11 fiction speaks back to the state’s hegemonic imaginaries through an analysis of Joseph O’Neill’s Netherland. Irom proceeds from the premise that in light of the nation’s "geopolitically imperialist" ambitions, it becomes all the more crucial to delineate opp…
