  • Turkish correlatives in monolingual Turkish and bilingual Turkish-German grammar

Open Access•Polina Berezovskaya, Beck et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Workshop on…•2023

Our paper presents an experimental study on multiple correlatives in Turkish. The research questions that guided our study are twofold: (a) What are the presuppositions of multiple correlatives in Turkish? (b) Is there a difference between monolingual Turkish speakers and bilingual Turkish-German speakers with respect to multiple correlatives? Question (a) targets the presuppositions of interrogative-based correlatives. Since the presuppositions …

  • The at-issue status of ideophones in German

Open Access•Kathryn Rose Barnes, Cornelia Ebert et al.•ARTICLE•Glossa a journal of general…•2022

Formal linguistics generally assumes that form-meaning relations in spoken language are arbitrary and not iconic. Ideophones, such as the English splish-splash have been considered exceptions to this rule of arbitrariness. Recently, however, researchers have begun to examine iconicity in spoken language more closely. Following work which established the default not- at-issue status of iconic co-speech gestures, here we discuss the crosslinguistic…

  • The Semantic Processing of Motion Verbs

Open Access•Julia Lukassek, Anna Prysłopska et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Psycholinguistic…•2017•References: 17

Underspecification and coercion are two prominent interpretive mechanisms to account for meaning variability beyond compositionality. While there is plentiful evidence that natural language meaning constitution exploits both mechanisms, it is an open issue whether a concrete phenomenon of meaning variability is an instance of underspecification or coercion. This paper argues that this theoretical dispute can be settled experimentally. The test ca…

  • Effects of focus and definiteness on children's word order

Open Access•Barbara Höhle, Robin Hörnig et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Child Language•2014

Two experiments tested how faithfully German children aged 4 ;5 to 5 ;6 reproduce ditransitive sentences that are unmarked or marked with respect to word order and focus (Exp1) or definiteness (Exp2). Adopting an optimality theory (OT) approach, it is assumed that in the German adult grammar word order is ranked lower than focus and definiteness. Faithfulness of children's reproductions decreased as markedness of inputs increased; unmarked struct…
