This paper examines gender gaps in the perception of socially sensitive topics –such as feminism, gender-based violence, immigration, religion, and pornography– among university students in Málaga. Using lexical association tasks and the calculation of the Lexical Centrality Index (LCI), we identify significant divergences in the lexical repertoires activated by male and female participants. The analysis reveals that women tend to use more intros…

  • Propuesta de construcción de nuevos corpus

Open Access•Álvaro Molina García, Antonio Manuel Ávila-Muñoz•ARTICLE•Oralia análisis del discurso oral•2024

Despite the fact that corpus linguistics has been nourished in recent years by data collected in the new electronic communication channels, the bases from oral sources of telematic origin are still scarce. However, as in many other research areas, the health crisis caused by covid-19 has generated the need to accelerate the incorporation of this type of material in sociolinguistic research. Consequently, within the framework of the PRESEEA-Málaga…

  • Spanish Students’ Categorical Perceptions of Feminist Movements

    Open Access•Antonio Manuel Ávila-Muñoz•ARTICLE•Journal of Psycholinguistic…•2024•References: 46

Identifying a society’s perceptions and, by extension, opinions of a certain social movement can help to understand to what extent the movement has been successful in effecting change. When working to gain such an understanding, a focus on the student population is essential, as their opinions provide insight into the future conditions of society and, thus, into whether the movement has been successful in effecting lasting social change. The pres…

The absence or presence of the subject personal pronoun is a linguistic phenomenon typical of pro-drop languages. This paper initiates a series of studies that try to find the linguistic and social determinants that affect the occurrence of this pronoun in the variety of Spanish spoken in Malaga (Spain). We show partial results concerning speakers with a low educational level obtained from the study of the first linguistic corpus of the Project f…

    Open Access•Antonio Manuel Ávila-Muñoz•ARTICLE•Spanish in Context•2022

Mitigation is a pragmatic-linguistic category traditionally related to the theory of verbal politeness. Previous work on this issue has shown that conversational hedging is largely conditioned by the speaker’s identity (Albelda 2012, Cestero 2011, Samper 2017), that is why a deeper understanding of attenuating phenomena requires close attention to the social context underpinning communicative interactions. This paper advances some preliminary res…

    Open Access•Antonio Manuel Ávila-Muñoz•ARTICLE•Revista EntreLinguas•2020

In previous work, we proved the effectiveness of teaching "proximity lexicon" (i.e. dialectal, regional or local words) in foreign language classrooms as a tool for the migrants' better integration — particularly those at risk of social exclusion (Avila, 2019a, b) —. The present paper analyses the social variation of dialect words collected during the Project on the Social Stratification of Available Lexicon in Malaga City (CONSOLEX-Project). The…

  • Revisiting the Use of the Proximity Lexicon in the Classroom for Immigrant Populations at Risk of Social Exclusion

    Open Access•Antonio Manuel Ávila-Muñoz, Antonio-Manuel Ávila-Muñoz•ARTICLE•Languages•2019•References: 12

This paper shows the convenience of using linguistic resources in foreign language teaching based on the proximity lexicon (dialectal and local) in order to facilitate the integration of socially vulnerable immigrant groups. The social barriers facing them intensify because of lack of knowledge of the linguistic varieties of the host countries and their functions. This study is a continuation of another one published in 2019 in which we presented…

  • Entre limonetis y malaguitas

Antonio Manuel Ávila-Muñoz, Antonio Manuel Ávila Muñoz•ARTICLE•Hispania•2017•Cited by: 2

  • Can speakers’ virtual lexical richness be calculated

Antonio Manuel Ávila-Muñoz, Antonio Manuel Ávila Muñoz•ARTICLE•Spanish in Context•2016

The aim of this paper is to show an original method of calculating individual lexical richness. This method leads to a non-linear optimization. A randomized algorithm, Simulated Annealing, is used in order to carry out the optimization. This procedure has allowed us to represent a function from which we obtain a reliable pattern for lexical estimation. Furthermore, this method is compatible with other traditional procedures used for the estimatio…

  • Redes sociales y sociolingüística

Felix Requena, Félix Requena Santos et al.•ARTICLE•Sociolinguistic Studies•2002•References: 6

In this paper we review the concept of social network and its usefulness for speech analysis. The study of networks is a very useful tool for the approach to vernacular variation within speech communities. Networks are not disruptive with the relations previously established among individuals. Thus, it proves to be an essential method for the study of mutual influences among participants in communicative events. By means of particular investigati…
