It’s (More Than) Personal: The Mediating Role of Comic Styles Between Personality and Irony/Sarcasm Use
In the present study, we examined the role of comic styles in mediating the relationship between personality traits and the use of verbal irony/sarcasm. We tested a group of 848 participants from the UK, Canada, and the USA with the Comic Style Markers (CSM) and the Sarcasm Self-Report Scale (SSS). We found that comic styles significantly influence how personality traits such as neuroticism, agreeableness, and openness to experience/intellect aff…
Self-reported irony and psychosocial factors: A cross-sectional study
The current study examines individual differences in self-reported irony use in a sample of 151 young adult females in Poland ( M age = 22.19; SD = 2.17). In addition to self-reported irony use (via the Irony Self-Report Scale, a Polish translation of the Sarcasm Self-Report Scale, SSS, Ivanko et al. 2004 ), we analyzed Big Five personality traits ( Ten-Item Personality Inventory , Gosling et al. 2003 ), humor styles ( The Humor Styles Questionna…
Intentional bilingualism does not hinder morphosyntactic development in L1: A study with children speaking Polish
Background: Intentional bilingualism (IB) refers to caregivers’ deliberate, planned introduction of an additional language at home—beyond what community exposure alone would provide—and is characterized by caregivers’ use of their non-native language with the child. While scholarly debate continues about whether IB affects first-language (L1) outcomes, evidence on morphosyntax specifically remains limited. Therefore, we examined L1 morphosyntax u…
Differences in sentence repetition tasks in studies on bilingual children’s language development: A systematic review
Aims and Objectives: Sentence repetition (SRep) tasks are a popular, valid, and cost-effective method of measuring language development. However, their heterogeneity and flexibility of use and adaptation may impact the obtained results. This may be particularly significant when using SRep tasks to identify language problems in children. Methodology: To bring attention to this issue, we carried out a systematic review of English-language studies u…
Psychometric adaptation of the Comic Style Markers in a Polish sample
We attempted a psychometric validation of a Polish-language version of the Comic Style Markers questionnaire (CSM). A sample of 1785 adult Polish participants completed a Polish translation of the CSM (CSM-PL), the HSQ, and the IPIP-BFM-20. A self-other correlation analysis was carried out on 116 Polish university students. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses of several models have shown a six-factor, 33-item solution to have good model …
Sarcasm Use in Polish and Turkish: The Role of Personality, Age and Gender
Comparing Online and Face-to-Face Administration of the Polish Sentence Repetition Task in Monolingual and Multilingual Children: Higher Scores in Face-to-Face Testing
This study compared online and face-to-face (f2f) testing using the short Polish version of the LITMUS Sentence Repetition Task (SRep) with multilingual and monolingual Polish-speaking children. The shift to remote testing during the COVID-19 pandemic prompted questions about whether online methods yield results comparable with in-person testing for assessing multilingual children’s grammatical abilities. Reliable online testing could enhance acc…

“Mom said it in quotation marks!” Irony comprehension and metapragmatic awareness in 8-year-olds
This study investigated links between the development of children’s understanding of ironic comments and their metapragmatic knowledge. Forty-six 8-year-olds completed the short version of the Irony Comprehension Task, during which they were presented with ironic comments in three stories and asked to provide reasons for why the speaker in a story uttered an ironic comment. We coded their responses and compared the results to similar data collect…
Let’s entertain others: The relationship between comic styles and the histrionic self-presentation style in Polish, British, and Canadian samples
People who have the histrionic self-presentation style (HSP) demonstrate certain As-If-behaviors, involving pretense and role play, in their daily interactions to seek attention and amuse others. Doing As-If may be closely related to humor behaviors, so we examined this relationship in greater detail by using the Comic Style Markers (CSM) in Polish, English, and Canadian samples ( N = 285, 383, and 305, respectively; M age = 20.85, SD = 5.35). We…

Humor style predicts sarcasm use – evidence from Turkish speakers
Humor and sarcasm are closely related – sarcasm is often identified with aggressive humor or humorous mockery. Research in this area is common in Western European languages, but not in non-WEIRD populations. The aim of the study was to examine the relationship between humor styles and sarcasm use in the Turkish-speaking population. We also attempted to predict the use of different sarcasm types (general sarcasm, embarrassment diffusion, face-savi…
“Unicorn humour isn’t very subtle.” Graphic novels and comics as a potential didactic tool for teaching irony to children: The example of Dana Simpson’s Phoebe and her unicorn
Children find verbal irony difficult to understand. Yet they need to acquire the skill of comprehending it in order to become proficient communicators and to master deep reading. Graphic novels and comics can expose children to non-literal expressions, including verbal irony. In the paper, I argue that graphic novels and comics may be used as a powerful tool for teaching irony to children, using Phoebe and her Unicorn by Dana Simpson as an exampl…

Children's Comprehension of Irony: Studies on Polish-Speaking Preschoolers
We explored the topic of irony comprehension by preschoolers. Two hundred and thirty-one children (77 four-year-olds, 89 five-year-olds, and 65 six-year-olds) were tested with the Irony Comprehension Task (ICT, Banasik and Bokus, in: Poster presented at the psycholinguistics conference in Flanders, Berg en Dal, 2012). Participants were asked questions checking comprehension of the intended meaning behind an ironic comment. Four conditions were us…
Non-literal speech comprehension in preschool children – an example from a study on verbal irony
The study aims to answer questions about the developmental trajectories of irony comprehension. The research focuses on the problem of the age at which ironic utterances can first be understood. The link between ironic utterance comprehension and early Theory of Mind (ToM) is examined as well. In order to approach the topic, 46 preschool children were tested with the Irony Comprehension Task (Banasik & Bokus, 2013) and the Reflection on Thinking …
