The Relationship Between Creativity, Identity, Place, and Community Resilience
This paper examines the relationship between creativity, identity, and place for the small economically challenged Delta City, Mississippi of Clarksdale, United States, a once prosperous manufacturing and farming community. Promoted as the Delta’s epicenter of blues music, over the last twenty years key business stakeholders in the city’s renaissance have been committed to developing local and international awareness of Clarksdale’s historic arch…
Moistening the dry lips of Dracula
Screen vampires define themselves through dominant or subliminal variations on the loss of, and desire for, fertility. Taking the gender-fluid figure of Dracula from Bram Stoker to the 2020 Netflix series as prototypical of traditional vampirism, it will be argued that while simulating youth, beauty and menstruation through biting and sucking, the Count defaults to a state of dehydrated infertility. As male-female shape-shifters, Dracula and the …
Affect, sibling bonds and childhood sexual abuse in Shame and The War Zone
This paper considers how subtextual suggestions of childhood abuse overshadow the centrally presented narratives of sex addiction in Steve McQueen’s Shame and adolescent daughter-father incest in Tom Roth’s The War Zone. Drawing on these films as companion pieces, we discuss how the unseen, unspoken, and physical conveyance of emotion – understood as affect triggered by life experience – is able to capture the trauma of familial child abuse, the …
The spoken and unspoken nature of child abuse in the miniseries Devil’s Playground
In a departure from Fred Schepisi’s film The Devil’s Playground, the television sequel Devil’s Playground focuses on the cultural impact of priest child abuse. It will be argued that the prolific mainstream media coverage of these crimes before the series was made, and anticipated during its screening, lent a form of permission to green light the production. In focusing on Case 28 of the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexu…
Blue Jasmine
Australia's lost children at play
This article examines the body of locally and internationally produced cinema by Australian director Baz Luhrmann. A filmmaker who in the past has struggled to achieve critical credibility in the mainstream press, Luhrmann is consistently supported by multinationals like 20th Century Fox for his mass domestic and global appeal. Of interest in this analysis is the way in which each film plays with the dominant Australian cultural complex of the ‘l…

Playing with the Big Kids
This article critically examines the Australian Broadcasting Authority's Television Program Standard 23 (TPS 23) - a set of regulations governing the importation of offshore television advertisements. Point five of the Australian Content in Advertising section of TPS 23 (effective from 23 January 1992) stipulates that: 'A licensee must ensure that at least 80 per cent of the total advertising time (other than the time occupied by exempt advertise…
