Understanding the complexity of children’s everyday mobilities: Non-instrumental aspects in sustainable transport and planning policy making in Australia
There is a growing body of research recognising the complexity surrounding children’s mobilities influenced by multifaceted and relational factors. This is critical in the provision of an evidence base to better inform transport policies aimed at reducing private car usage in countries such as Australia where the private car dominates the everyday mobilities of families with school-aged children. This paper draws on quantitative and qualitative su…
Being there: Capturing and Conveying Noisy Slices of Walking in the City
The practice of walking allows us to engage with the city slowly, through kinaesthetic skill and the multisensorial apparatus of the body. Studying the city through this immersed practice-on-the-move facilitates attention to the direct contact with the urban environment, and hence brings forth analytical orientations that highlight ‘being there’ on the move. Indeed, if not including immersed experiences of mobility, fluidity, and contingency in t…
Mobilities design – towards a research agenda for applied mobilities research
In this paper, we identify the nexus between design (architecture, urban design, service design, etc.) and mobilities as a new and emerging research field. In this paper, we apply a “situational mobilities” perspective and take point of departure in the pragmatist question: “What design decisions and interventions affords this particular mobile situation?” The paper presents the contours of an emerging research agenda within mobilities research. …
