Many musicians are facing unstable economic conditions in a highly competitive occupation concerning work opportunities, income and employment. In addition, several external crises have affected the working conditions of professional musicians during recent years. The COVID-19 pandemic, the war in Ukraine, the associated energy crisis and following inflation…

  • Institutional change in higher music education

    Open Access•Veronica Ski-Berg, Sigrid Røyseng•ARTICLE•International Journal of Music…•2024

Institutional change is being called for to renew higher music education (HME). But what institutional pressures, specifically, are driving these calls, and how are HME organisations responding to pressures to change? By turning to institutional theory, we lean on the concept of institutional isomorphism to shed light on how HME organisations may be navigating pressures to appear legitimate in the field to secure organisational survival. Drawing …

  • Moral economies in the community of Norwegian folk music practices

Open Access•John Vinge, Sigrid Røyseng et al.•ARTICLE•Music Education Research•2023

This article investigates the moral outlooks and obligations that are intertwined in the teaching and learning processes of the traditional folk music community in Norway and how moral aspects affect the development of professional identities. Theoretically, we combine the concept of a community of practice with a moral economy perspective. This allows us to see that professional folk musicians are positioned between two different moral economies…

More specifically, we focus on the actors’ understandings of the state’s moral obligations towards the cultural sector and …

  • Artists and Online Dissemination

Peter Booth, Sigrid Røyseng•ARTICLE•The Journal of Arts Management…•2022

This article analyzes visual artists’ response to online sales and dissemination technologies by mapping the range of corresponding positions and position-takings by professional artists in Norway. We consider whether artists’ responses align with traditional logics of artistic consecration identified in Bourdieu’s accounts of the field of cultural production, and how these responses correspond to Rogers’ theory of diffusion of innovations. Emplo…

  • Public art debates as boundary struggles

    Open Access•Sigrid Røyseng•ARTICLE•International Journal of Cultural…•2021•Referencias: 6

This article investigates the symbolic boundaries that are at play in controversies over public art projects and the criteria different groups of actors, (e.g. artists, art experts, bureaucrats, and local communities), use when evaluating public art. This investigation shed light on how art, artistic autonomy, and public spaces are subject to ”boundary struggles” in which the identities and worth of different social groups and the value of art in…

  • Museum leaders' perspectives on social media

Peter Booth, Anne Ogundipe et al.•ARTICLE•Museum Management and Curatorship•2020•Citada por: 9•Referencias: 35

These questions are discussed by comparing field experiences from two cultural forms that can be characterized as polar opposites when it comes to the degree to which they are legitimized: contemporary op…

The paper applies the concept of social contract from the sociology of p…

  • Artists in an Iron Cage? Artists’ Work in Performing Arts Institutions

Per Mangset, Bård Kleppe et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Arts Management…•2012

This article discusses artists’ work in performing arts institutions in Norway. Many scholars describe Nordic performing arts institutions as slow-moving and heavy “art factories,” where artistic creativity is almost suffocated within bureaucratic “prisons.” The general problem that we raise in the article is whether this pessimistic picture of the relation between state control, market influence, and artistic work is relevant for studying the pe…

This article focuses on artist identities in contemporary culture. In particular, the authors have studied how young Norwegian artists identify with the term “artist” in general and the charismatic myth of the artist in particular. It is argued that it is fruitful to treat the charismatic myth of the artist as a discourse that must be analysed in relation to specific social and cultural contexts and potentially under continuous reconstruction.
