New radiocarbon determinations from northwest France further contribute to the proposition - 25 years old now - that the megaliths of the region are astoundingly early in the west European Neolithic sequence

I describe here the establishment and use of statistical control graphs based on the analysis of variance for monitoring the stability of operation of radiocarbon dating counting systems
A Consideration of Some Basic Ideas for Quality Assurance in Radiocarbon Dating
Most radiocarbon ages are readily accepted by researchers in all disciplines. It is recognized, however, that discrepancies appear in the literature. These problems have been highlighted by the International Collaborative Study. The introduction of quality control and assurance techniques used in some laboratories for many years could reduce or eliminate aberrant results. Early English Boats
A large number of early boats discovered in the waterways of England are presently displayed in museums and as public monuments. In some cases conservation practices have caused problems in the radiocarbon dating of these otherwise undated artifacts. Specimen pretreatments are described and the chronology of the boats in different regions of England are presented with approximate calibration to calendar date ranges
Benzene Purity in Radiocarbon Dating Samples
Gas chromatographic analysis of the benzene obtained for radiocarbon dating revealed only very low levels (<200 ppm in total) of impurities, most of which were alkylbenzenes. Traces of acetone and phenol were also found. These impurities, at such low levels are thought unlikely to affect counting efficiency
An Archaeological Investigation of Early Mineworkings on Copa Hill, Cwmystwyth
In September 1986 a small excavation was done by S. T. to investigate an area of primitive-style mine-workings on Copa Hill, Cwmystwyth, Dyfed (SN816756). A small opencast and several overgrown tips associated with pebble hammers occur where the copper-rich Comet Lode outcrops on the brow of the hill. Copa Hill is within an area of seventeenth–twentieth-century lead-mine workings which extend for 1.2 km along the N side of the Ystwyth Valley (fig…

For decades the 'potbellied' monuments have been the center of a controversy in Mesoamerican archaeology. These massive boulder sculptures have been found at numerous sites associated with the major culture-historical problems of the Preclassic period in southern Mesoamerica. A secure dating of the style has not been possible and there have been several conflicting interpretations of their age and significance. One interpretation holds that some …

A research campaign into the scarcely known history and prehistoric origins of Scottish West Highland and Island settlement, has located an area of 'fossil' landscape at Coileagan an Udail (the Udal), N. Uist. The completion of a first stage of 14 years excavation (155 weeks) has provided detailed evidence of continuous occupation from the Iron Age to the eighteenth century AD. Sampling has shown positive indications of a similar picture back thr…

The Mesolithic settlement at Morton lies some six miles north-north-west of St. Andrews in Fife, Scotland (fig. 1). The area around the site, north-eastern Fife, is surrounded on three sides by water, and projects as a blunt peninsula into the North Sea.
