  • The City, Industry and The State

Frank Longstreth•CHAPTER•State and Economy in Contemporary…•2025

Much recent material attempting to analyse the state in advanced capitalist societies from a Marxist perspective has tried to formulate ‘systemic constraints’ on state activity beyond the rather contingent relations of political forces, i.e. to go beyond the usual concerns of political science. Similarly, such Marxist ‘political scientists’ as Miliband or Poulantzas, who posit a ‘relatively autonomous’ field of politics and call for a specific an…

  • The New Institutionalism in Political Science and Sociology

    Thomas A Koelble, Karen Schweers Cook et al.•ARTICLE•Comparative Politics•1995•Cited by: 38•References: 3

Whenever a concept is packaged as new, social scientists are apt to be wary, and for good reason. Fads come and go. The enormous number of dissertations, schools of thought, books, and articles based upon prefixes such as post, neo, and which enjoyed a brief stint in the bright sunshine of glory at various conventions only to disappear a few months later serves as a reminder of social science's tendency to reinvent the wheel. This volume brings together original essays by scholars working on a diverse range of empirical issues, but whose work is in each case informed by a 'historical institutional' approach to the study of politics. By bringing these pieces together, the volume highlights the methodological and theoretical foundations of this approach and illustrates the general contributions it has made to comparative politics. The essays demonstrate the potential of…

    Open Access•Frank H Longstreth, Frank Longstreth•ARTICLE•Political Studies•1988•Cited by: 13

This article examines the impact on British trade unions of the break in relations with the government, the economic recession and labour market developments in the 1980s. The shift towards a programme of ‘labour exclusion’ is related to specific policies designed to weaken trade unions and liberalize labour markets. A close investigation of data on union organization and activity indicates that, despite evident reversals, a full-scale de-institu…
