  • Modernization, Agricultural Economics, and U.S. Policy towards Land Reform in South Vietnam

    Open Access•Andrew Gawthorpe, Andrew J Gawthorpe•ARTICLE•The International History Review•2022

The issue of land tenure loomed large in the Vietnam War, providing significant motivation to members of the Vietnamese Communist movement. Despite this, the United States never made a serious effort to urge the non-Communist regime in Saigon to carry out a thorough program of land redistribution. This article explains why by tracing the development of post-war U.S. policy towards the question of land redistribution and how this impacted American…

  • Mad Dog?’ Samuel Huntington and the Vietnam War

    Open Access•Andrew Gawthorpe, Andrew J Gawthorpe•ARTICLE•Journal of Strategic Studies•2018•Cited by: 2•References: 4

Harvard professor Samuel P. Huntington has frequently been considered a Vietnam War hawk. His observation that 'forced-draft urbanization' might help the United States win the war has come to define his engagement in contemporary strategic debates. This essay argues that both Huntington's academic work and his private policy advice to the U.S. Government in fact urged a political settlement to the conflict. It argues that in spite of this, Huntin…

  • David R. Contosta, America’s Needless Wars

    Open Access•Andrew Gawthorpe, Andrew J Gawthorpe•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary History•2018

Using Maoist terminology, Garvin favoured the 'radical, revolutionary line of resistance' in the black freedom struggle over a 'gradualist approach, tactical accommodations, and compromises with the structure of power' (p.174).These black travellers shared a common conviction that 'China's socialist experiment and its brand of Third World Marxism. . .offered them one, though not the only, utopic model of economic democracy, mass political partici…

  • All Counterinsurgency is Local

    Open Access•Andrew Gawthorpe, Andrew J Gawthorpe•ARTICLE•Small Wars and Insurgencies•2017•Cited by: 8•References: 20

Although the concept of legitimacy is central to Western counterinsurgency theory, most discourse in this area black-boxes the concept. It hence remains under-specified in many discussions of counterinsurgency. Fortunately, recent research on rebel governance and legitimacy contributes to our understanding of the problems faced by counterinsurgents who want to boost state legitimacy while undermining that of the rebels. Taken together, this resea…

  • Spies, advisors, and grunts

Jeffrey H Michaels, Jeffrey Michaels et al.•ARTICLE•Small Wars and Insurgencies•2015•Cited by: 1•References: 3

Vietnam was a complex conflict, which historians and political scientists have struggled to understand. Some of the bitterest disputes in the historiography revolve around the US approach to counterinsurgency in Vietnam. Many different facets of the war have received the attention of filmmakers, and an examination of their work suggests new ways of thinking about the conflict. This article considers film portrayals of three phases of the Vietnam …

  • The Ford Administration and Security Policy in the Asia-Pacific After the Fall of Saigon

    Open Access•Andrew Gawthorpe, Andrew J Gawthorpe•ARTICLE•The Historical Journal•2009•References: 2

This article enhances our understanding of the Ford administration's foreign policy by examining how it sought to react to a changed situation in the Asia-Pacific after the fall of Saigon in May 1975. It shows how changes in regional politics forced the administration to adapt to a situation in which allies began to look to the Communist countries for friendship and to reconsider having American forces on their soil. It illustrates this situation…
