  • Reading utopias now

Tue Andersen Nexø, Iben Engelhardt Andersen•ARTICLE•Textual Practice•2023

What use are utopias in lean years? The question posed by the German Romantic poet Friedrich Hölderlin, and repeated a century and a half later by Martin Heidegger – wozu Dichter in dürftiger Zeit

  • From handsome sailor to cute youth

    Iben Engelhardt Andersen•ARTICLE•Textual Practice•2022

Herman Melville’s Billy Budd, Sailor is a novel about war and erotic exploitation in which Billy Budd becomes the centre of the affective management aboard the war ship. The title of the play, Romeo’s and Juliet’s names, determines the tragic plot, which ends with their deaths, but also offers these lovers a certain timelessness. Reading the all-time canonical tale of p…

    Open Access•Iben Engelhardt Andersen•ARTICLE•K&K - Kultur og Klasse•2015

This article examines contemporary American medical television dramas and their intersections with 19th century literary realism asking how technical language and sentimental speech are connected in these cultural representations of illness and medical discourse. I argue that they share a common effort of medical realism: Questions of medical knowledge, diagnosis and the delimitations of the normal and the pathological not only inform the themati…
