  • Humor and the Law

Open Access•Brigitte Adriaensen, Andrew Benjamin Bricker et al.•ARTICLE•Law Culture and the Humanities•2023•Cited by: 4•References: 2

In this introduction, we outline several approaches to the role humor might play in relation to the law through the six articles contributed to this special issue and through important and more recent theories that have guided discussions of humor. We take up two aspects in particular when addressing the efficacy of humor: its ability to serve as a diagnostic tool and even cure; and its weaknesses, limitations, and shortcomings. Finally, we outli…

  • Gold, cocaine, montage

    Open Access•Brigitte Adriaensen•ARTICLE•Textual Practice•2023•Cited by: 1

This paper proposes to read Michael Taussig’s My Cocaine Museum (2004) as a forerunner of recent research on the Latin American extractive zone (Gómez-Barris). In his remarkable book, the Australian anthropologist writes on the relation between two prime materials that have an important impact on the past and present of Colombia: gold and cocaine. Focusing on a region close to the Pacific Coast, more specifically the gold-mining village of Santa …

  • The difficulty of judging jests

in Sorgues, in Southeastern France, a three-year old child was sent to preschool with a T-shirt reading "je suis une bombe!" [I am a bomb!] on one side, and "Jihad, n le 11 septembre" [Jihad, born on September 11th] on the other. The T-shirt played on the child's actual name (Jihad, which is common in the Arab world) and date of birth (which was actually September 11th). Jihad's uncle had given him the T-shirt as a birthday present, and asked his…

  • El acapulcalipsis en Cacapulco

    Open Access•Brigitte Adriaensen•ARTICLE•Caravelle•2015

  • Cultural representations of contemporary Mexican drug culture

    Open Access•Brigitte Adriaensen•ARTICLE•European Journal of Humour Research•2015•References: 6

Ever since Felipe Caldern declared the war on drugs at the beginning of his presidency in 2006, violence has drastically permeated Mexican society. In this paper, I will focus on the different uses of dark humour and irony in the representation of the mutilated and abject body in contemporary Mexican culture, especially in literature. Therefore, I will take into consideration the Mexican tradition of humoristic approaches to death, which might se…

  • Memoria, ironía y comunidad

    Brigitte Adriaensen•ARTICLE•Iberoromania•2015•References: 1
