  • Situated transformations of women and gender relations in small-scale fisheries and communities in a globalized world

    Open Access•Katia Frangoudès, Siri Gerrard et al.•ARTICLE•Maritime Studies•2019•Cited by: 9•References: 2

The need to uncover, interrogate, and integrate women's contributions to fisheries in research and development has never been clearer. As coastal and fisheries management continues to look to the Sustainable Development Goals and the Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries in the context of Food Security and Poverty Eradication, as frameworks and mandates, gender equity and equality have become a central concern. To fi…

  • Gender, mobilities and transformation in Loppa, a rural municipality of Norway’s High North

    Deatra Walsh, Siri Gerrard•ARTICLE•Gender Place & Culture•2018•Cited by: 3•References: 17

This article demonstrates the persistence of rural and peripheral coastal places in spite of widespread economic change through the lens of gendered mobilities. We focus on Loppa, a mountainous, ferry-dependent and sparsely populated municipality in the County of Finnmark in Norway’s High North. The fishery in Loppa, while the main source of employment for men, has been in decline. Conversely, employment in health, social services and other profe…

  • Margaret Willsons bok Seawomenof Iceland. Survival on the Edge

    Open Access•Siri Gerrard•ARTICLE•Norsk antropologisk tidsskrift•2018

  • Mobilities, materialities, and masculinities: Interconnected mobility practices in Norwegian coastal fisheries

    Siri Gerrard•ARTICLE•Norsk Geografisk Tidsskrift -…•2013•Cited by: 16•References: 7

On the coast of Finnmark in Northern Norway, the local fishery is and has been an integral aspect of the working lives of men and women. Fishing, a basis activity of fishery, is an inherently mobile activity. It involves bodily movement, as well as spatial and virtual movement, as fishers find available stocks also with the aid of digital and information technology. The case presented in the article shows that successful participation in both the…
