  • The spaces of colonial towns

    Open Access•Michael Yeo•ARTICLE•Urban History•2025

This article explores the social history of Sandakan and Jesselton (Kota Kinabalu) by studying how their urban environments were organized and navigated. Although the neighbourhood was not officially recognized as a category of space, it argues that analogous quarters existed within the towns during the early twentieth century. As the commercial capitals of British North Borneo, the towns contained migrant people of various ethnicities that forme…

  • Before the port city

    Open Access•Michael Yeo•ARTICLE•Urban History•2025•References: 12

Between the 1770s and the 1870s, there were no fewer than eight attempts to establish colonial footholds along the coasts of Sabah, the northern quarter of Borneo. This article charts the history of these abortive settlements and, in doing so, subverts established narratives of colonialism and urbanization that usually centre on the British North Borneo Company from the 1880s. It argues that these settlements should be regarded as part of a persi…

  • The 3rd Asean Reader

Kee Beng Ooi, Sanchita Basu Das et al.•BOOK•3rd ASEAN Reader•2015

Over the past two decades, ISEAS has compiled abridged articles that analyse key aspects of Southeast Asia’s development and the ASEAN process. The ASEAN Reader was published in 1992 just as the Cold War ended, while The Second ASEAN Reader came in 2003 in the wake of the 1997 Asian crisis and the September 11 attacks in 2001. The past decade has not been spared its share of intense changes, with the rise of China and India bringing new challenge…

  • The Rights of Science and the Rights of Politics

    Open Access•Michael Yeo•ARTICLE•The Canadian Journal of Sociology•2012•Cited by: 2

One of the main issues in the long-form census controversy concerned the relationship between science and politics. Through analysis of the arguments and underlying assumptions of four influential and exemplary interventions that were made in the name of science, this paper outlines a normative account of this relationship. The paper nuances the science-protective ideals that critics invoked and argues that such conceptual resources are needed if…

  • Toward an ethic of empowerment for health promotion

    Open Access•Michael Yeo•ARTICLE•Health Promotion International•1993

This paper lays out a conceptual framework for articulating some main ethical issues raised by health promotion and illness prevention. Building from the concept of ‘enabling’ in the Ottawa Charter, the paper articulates and advocates an ‘ethic of empowerment’ for health promotion. If health promotion is understood in terms of enabling, the tired ethical debates between freedom and responsibility, or individual and community, are recast in a new …

  • Ethics, Feminism, and Human Reproduction

    Open Access•Michael Yeo, Michael G C H Yeo•ARTICLE•Dialogue•1989•References: 2

This work interlinks three rapidly developing fields: human reproduction, applied ethics, and feminism. The convergence of the three, each of which is interesting and important in its own right, creates a synergistic effect by which each mutually illuminates the others
