Lessons from the graduates of one‐year theological programs in the Australian College of Theology
The uptake in one‐year theological programs by students in the Australian College of Theology (ACT) has heightened interest in the question of whether these short qualifications meet the expectations of students and equip them for their ministry, whether that be in their local church, parachurch organizations or other vocations. This article reports on a survey of graduated students from one‐year ACT programs. The research explored how well the q…
Investigating high levels of small group participation in churches: Case study research from Australia
This paper reports on research into the phenomenon of higher levels of participation in church small groups using a Case Study methodology. Specifically, it studies three Australian churches with high levels of small group participation. The study of these exemplary cases yields information about not only what makes for attractive church small groups but also how congregations can foster high levels of participation. The Songs We Sing: A Textual Analysis of Popular Congregational Songs of the 20th and 21st Century
Contemporary worship songs have been the subject of criticism over their lyrical quality. Objective assessment of the veracity of the criticisms has been difficult to achieve. This research seeks to address this issue by performing a textual analysis of the most popular hymns of the 19 th and 20 th centuries and contemporary popular worship songs and comparing the results. The research concludes that although there are differences in the lyrical …

Faking revisited: Exerting strategic control over performance on the Implicit Relational Assessment Procedure
Across four studies, we demonstrate that effects obtained from the Implicit Relational Assessment Procedure, like those obtained from other indirect procedures, are not impervious to strategic manipulation. In experiment 1, we found that merely informing participants to “fake” their performance without providing a concrete strategy to do so did not eliminate, reverse, or in any way alter the obtained outcomes. However, when those same instruction…

We highlight the role of the three regional Producer N…
Political Activist as Ethnographer', Revisited
In this essay I revisit and expand upon George Smith's landmark article, 'Political Activist as Ethnographer' (1990). Political activist ethnography (PAE) is a specialized form of institutional ethnography (IE) that has not received nearly enough attention in the twenty years since the original publication of Smith's article. In an effort to revisit and bolster this research approach, I provide an overview of IE/PAE and critically engage with thr…
