  • Where Socialist Youth and Anti-Colonial Activists Met

    Daniel Siemens•ARTICLE•Comparativ•2026

This article advocates for an entangled practice history of interwar anti-colonialism and youth by exploring the political and cultural significance of the Indian News Service and Information Bureau in interwar Berlin. It was a place where young socialists from the left wing of the German-Jewish youth movement mingled with Indian anti-colonial activists, as well as a space for international encounters more widely. But how exactly did this fusion …

  • Glaube und Geschäft. Evangelikale Prediger und die Transformation des US-amerikanischen Protestantismus zwischen 1865 und 1930

    Open Access•Daniel Siemens•ARTICLE•Historische Zeitschrift•2024

  • Lawyers Writing History

    Open Access•Daniel Siemens•ARTICLE•Journal of Modern European History•2023

This article explores the Geschichts- and Vergangenheitspolitik, or politics of the past, of the United Restitution Office/Organisation (URO) in the post-war years and asks how it impacted on the early historiography of the Holocaust. I demonstrate that the URO leadership took a conscious decision to publicly downplay the role of its organisation in German reparations to maximise its legal and political clout behind closed doors. While this strat…

  • Reparations and Oil in the Cold War

    Open Access•Daniel Siemens•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary History•2023•References: 2

This article analyses the British perspectives on the Luxembourg Reparations Agreement between Israel and the Federal Republic of Germany from 1952. Short-term economic interests were of central importance when it came to assessing the consequences of this deal for the United Kingdom. Her Majesty's Government welcomed West German reparations as a means of securing Israel's ability to pay for oil supplied by British companies, but at the same time…

When Axel Schildt, for many years the director of the Forschungsstelle für Zeitgeschichte in Hamburg and a distinguished contemporary and media historian, died of cancer in 2019, he left behind an unfinished, extensive manuscript in which he analysed the significance of public intellectuals in the early decades of the Federal Republic of Germany. Only eighteen months after his death, this manuscript has been turned into a voluminous book of nearl…

Thomas Kühne’s new book, The Rise and Fall of Comradeship: Hitler’s Soldiers, Male Bonding and Mass Violence in the Twentieth Century, is the substantially revised version of the German original that was published under the title Kameradschaft: Die Soldaten des nationalsozialistischen Krieges und das 20. Daniel Siemens•ARTICLE•Journal of Genocide Research•2017

Most histories of the National Socialist stormtroopers (SA) come to a close with the Night of the Long Knives in the summer of 1934. For the remaining eleven years of National Socialist rule, the stormtroopers are usually regarded as a peripheral ‘nostalgic drinking companionship’ of early Nazi activists who, apart from their involvement in the persecution of the Jews, did not wield much influence. In contrast to such views, this article argues t…

  • Franz Pfeffer von Salomon

    Daniel Siemens•ARTICLE•German History•2017

When the National Socialist German Workers’ Party (NSDAP) became the second strongest party in the Reichstag elections of 14 September 1930, the political career of Franz Pfeffer von Salomon was already over. Two weeks prior, he had resigned from the supreme leadership of the Nazi stormtroopers (SA), a position he had occupied between late 1926 and the summer of 1930. During these years, Pfeffer had led the central SA leadership office in Munich,…

  • Writing the History of the SA at the International Military Tribunal

    Open Access•Daniel Siemens•ARTICLE•Journal of Modern European History•2016

This article explores the importance of the International Military Tribunal in Nuremberg for modern historiography using the example of the proceedings against the National Socialist Sturmabteilungen (SA). The tribunal’s verdict from 1946 that acquitted the SA from the charge of having been a «criminal organisation» did not only influence the legal handling of stormtroopers’ crimes in the immediate post war years, but also contributed to the imag…
