Duck Fights
In September 1991 Walt Disney's legal representatives in Israel sued prolific Israeli cartoonist Dudu Geva for using the figure of Donald Duck without permission. The case, which worked its way to the Israeli Supreme Court, sparked a broader conversation in Israel about the place of American cultural icons and idioms in Israeli life. While existing treatments emphasize Jewish Israeli optimism with American influence on their lives, the article de…
Fearing “the End of Zionism”
On February 19, 1981, Shmuel Lahis, the general manager of the Jewish Agency for Israel (the organization coordinating immigration absorption in Israel) resigned at the culmination of a public scandal. Three years earlier, Lahis’s very appointment as the general manager had sparked public protests due to the fact that in 1948, then-First Lieutenant Lahis stood trial for killing thirty-three unarmed civilians in the village of Hula (three kilomete…

The Roots of the Israel Lobby
Sometimes syllabi and the lived world clash directly in unpredictable ways. On a Thursday afternoon about eight years ago I was wrapping up a session of my seminar on the history of U.S.-Israeli relations. As chairs screeched and bags zipped, I reminded everybody that next week we would read from The Israel Lobby by John Mearsheimer and Stephen Walt.1 Just as I was about to leave, a student approached to explain apologetically that he would be mi…

Among other initiatives, Nathan flew illegally from Israel to Egypt to start diplomatic negotiations in 1966 and established the offshore radio station “Voice of Peace” (1973–93) which broadcast in English from international waters in t…
Self-deception, war, and the quest for the appropriate prophylactic
A contribution to the roundtable on Anna Galeotti’s book. This review examines the utility of taking a prophylactic approach to the study of the history of U.S. military interventions
Israel in the American Mind
This book examines the changing meanings Americans and Israelis invested in the relationship between their countries from the late 1950s to the 1980s. Bringing to light previously unexamined sources, this study is the first to investigate the intricate mechanisms that defined and redefined Israel's place in American imagination through the war-strewn 1960s and 1970s. Departing from traditional diplomatic histories that focus on the political elit…
