The Hidden Crisis Threatening American Democracy
As political leaders increasingly seek partisan control over the armed forces and critics simultaneously call on the military to restrain elected leaders, the norms governing democratic civilian control are eroding. Preserving democracy requires renewed civilian responsibility for how military power is governed and used.
Perception of Safety of Automated Vehicles: Age and the Influence of the Source and Content of Safety-Related Messages
Automated vehicles (AVs) have the potential to improve road safety and improve transportation access, particularly for older adults. As a cutting-edge technology where few have personal experience, individuals’ initial perceptions of the safety of AVs will likely stem from communications originating from various stakeholders. A survey instrument was developed to both implicitly and explicitly estimate how personal perceptions of AV safety are inf…
Women, Younger Adults, and Singles Were Most Likely to Report Loneliness During the Pandemic: Evidence From a 15-Month National Longitudinal Survey
Self-reports of loneliness were growing in the United States even before the COVID-19 pandemic. Preventative health measures during the pandemic, such as social distancing and lockdowns, raised concerns that self-reports of loneliness would further increase. Published literature from the first few months of the pandemic supported these concerns, but long-term effects were largely unknown. Here, we examined whether self-reported loneliness varied …
Individual differences in retirement savings: The role of future self-continuity and numeracy
Worldwide, life expectancy is increasing while birth rates are declining resulting in an increasing proportion of older adults in the population. Furthermore, increased life expectancy has not been reflected in a proportional increase in the average retirement age, resulting in a growing number of individuals relying on nonemployment sources of income. Older adults today are living 4 years longer after leaving the workforce compared with the 1980…
Older Age Is Associated with Fewer Depression and Anxiety Symptoms Following Extreme Weather Adversity
Climate change is associated with an increase in the frequency of extreme weather that threatens emotional well-being, with some research pointing to increased vulnerability among older adults. We investigated how age relates to depression and anxiety following adversities due to extreme weather or natural disaster. Socioemotional selectivity theory (SST) posits that older age buffers against emotional distress. The strength and vulnerability int…
Pay One or Pay All? The Role of Incentive Schemes in Decision Making Across Adulthood
An opportunity of accumulating incentives has similar portfolio effects on younger and older adults' decisions. In general, people appear to decide less cautiously in pay-all than pay-one scenarios. The impact of different incentive schemes should be carefully considered in aging and decision research
Exploring the educational experiences of children and young people adopted from care: Using the voices of children and parents to inform practice
National monitoring data and research suggest that British adopted children achieve poorer educational outcomes and experience higher levels of emotional, social and learning difficulties in school, compared to the general population. However, few studies have elicited the perspectives of adopted children and adoptive parents in relation to school experiences. The current study used a qualitative design to explore the lived educational experience…
Military Service and Legislative Agendas: A Study of Legislators in Four States
Candidates often highlight military experience on the campaign trail. Do they also govern differently? This study examines whether and how military experience is associated with state lawmaking. We examine legislative productivity, success rates, and the substantive content of legislation with a large original data set. The data include over 60,000 bills introduced in four state legislatures over a 10-year time span, coded for their substantive f…
Do procedures for verbal reporting of thinking have to be reactive? A meta-analysis and recommendations for best reporting methods
Since its establishment, psychology has struggled to find valid methods for studying thoughts and subjective experiences. Thirty years ago, Ericsson and Simon (1980) proposed that participants can give concurrent verbal expression to their thoughts (think aloud) while completing tasks without changing objectively measurable performance (accuracy). In contrast, directed requests for concurrent verbal reports, such as explanations or directions to …
