  • Violence and Elias’s Historical Sociology: The Case of Cambodia

Open Access•Roderic Broadhurst, Thierry Bouhours et al.•ARTICLE•The British Journal of Criminology•2018•References: 11

Elias’ historical sociology method and his civilizing process theory have rarely been applied to study long-term trends in violence in non-western societies. Drawing from colonial archives, historical and contemporary secondary sources, official police data, crime victim surveys and newspaper records, we estimated the trends in homicide victims in Cambodia between 1900 and 2012, and, from a study of historical developments during the same period,…

  • Violence and the Civilising Process in Cambodia

Open Access•Roderic Broadhurst, Thierry Bouhours et al.•BOOK•Violence and the Civilising…•2015

In 1939, the German sociologist Norbert Elias published his groundbreaking work The Civilizing Process, which has come to be regarded as one of the most influential works of sociology today. In this insightful new study tracing the history of violence in Cambodia, the authors evaluate the extent to which Elias's theories can be applied in a non-western context. Drawing from historical and contemporary archival sources, constabulary statistics, vi…

  • Violence Against Women in Hong Kong: Results of the International Violence Against Women Survey

In Hong Kong, nearly 1,300 women participated by telephone in the International Violence Against Women Survey in 2006. One in five respondents had experienced violence since age 16. Sexual violence (13.4%) was more frequent than physical violence (11.7%). Women were more likely to be abused by men they knew (13.5%) than by strangers (8%). Compared with other surveyed countries, Hong Kong recorded among the lowest rates of violence by both intimat…

  • Human Trafficking and Moral Panic in Cambodia

Open Access•Chenda Keo, Thierry Bouhours et al.•ARTICLE•The Annals of the American…•2014•Cited by: 14•References: 9

This article examines the backgrounds of traffickers in Cambodia: why they became involved in trafficking, how they operate, their earnings, and the criminal justice system's response to their activities. Our research draws from interviews with justice officials, NGOs, and detained alleged traffickers; and from a review of police and prison records. The results challenge alarmist claims about the high prevalence, profitability, or role of organiz…

  • Business and The Risk of Crime in China

Roderic Broadhurst, Brigitte Bouhours et al.•ARTICLE•The British Journal of Criminology•2013•References: 8

The results of a large victimization survey conducted in 2006 of 5,117 businesses in Hong Kong, Shanghai, Shenzhen and Xi’an are reported. Over one-quarter (26.2 per cent) of businesses reported at least one incident of crime over the past year, but higher risks of commercial crimes (i.e. fraud, bribery, extortion and intellectual property offences) than common crime (i.e. robbery, assault and theft) were found. Across the cities, the rate of com…

Open Access•Roderic Broadhurst, Lee Kingwa et al.•BOOK•Business and the Risk of Crime in…•2011

The book analyses the results of a large scale victimisation survey that was conducted in 2005-06 with businesses in Hong Kong, Shanghai, Shenzhen and Xi’an. It also provides comprehensive background materials on crime and the criminal justice system in China. The survey, which measured common and non-conventional crime such as fraud, IP theft and corruption, is important because few crime victim surveys have been conducted with Chinese populatio…

  • Rape and Attrition in the Legal Process: A Comparative Analysis of Five Countries

    Kathleen Daly, Brigitte Bouhours•ARTICLE•Crime and Justice•2010•Cited by: 11•References: 65

Despite legal reforms, there has been little improvement in police, prosecutor, and court handling of rape and sexual assault. In the past 15 years in Australia, Canada, England and Wales, Scotland, and the United States, victimization surveys show that 14 percent of sexual violence victims report the offense to the police. Of these, 30 percent proceed to prosecution, 20 percent are adjudicated in court, 12.5 percent are convicted of any sexual o…

  • Youth sex offenders in court: An analysis of judicial sentencing remarks

    Open Access•Brigitte Bouhours, Kathleen Daly•ARTICLE•Punishment & Society•2007•Cited by: 4•References: 7

Sexual offending by young people is increasingly viewed as a social problem that requires a strong response, but there is little research on the legal treatment of youthful sex offenders. On the one hand, these youths may be viewed as potential future sex offenders; on the other hand, because of their youth and immaturity they may be considered more reformable than adults and their behaviour more excusable. This article builds on an archival stud…
