  • A new methodology for the construction of historical population grids: Spain in the late nineteenth century

    Open Access•Alfonso Díez-Minguela, Alfonso Díez‐Minguela et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Historical Geography•2026

This study presents a novel methodology for constructing a historical population grid that sheds light on the spatial distribution of the population in late-nineteenth-century Spain. The grid (ESGRID1887) is harmonised and compared with the population settlement patterns revealed by the most recent population grid produced by EUROSTAT (GEOSTAT2021). ESGRID1887 uses data from the Nomenclátor of Spain (1887) and cadastral records to distribute the …

  • Developing a population grid in a historical context: The Valencia region in late 19th century

    Alfonso Díez‐Minguela, Alfonso Díez Minguela et al.•ARTICLE•Historical Methods A Journal of…•2025•References: 19

In this work, we introduce a method to develop a population grid in a historical context. Our approach is based on generating numerous points (geographic coordinates) and delineating contours, and it has been applied to a specific case, the Valencia region in late nineteenth century. To generate points, we digitized and georeferenced the Nomenclator of Spain of 1888 (NE1888), a directory of the population entities. Besides, and using detailed bui…

  • Life Potential as a Basic Demographic Indicator

Open Access•Francisco J Goerlich, Francisco José Goerlich Gisbert et al.•ARTICLE•Social Indicators Research•2011•References: 4

This paper proposes an indicator that integrates life expectancy with the demographic structure of the population for a given society. By doing this, we have a simple indicator of mortality and aging combined, which could be very useful for developed societies. As is widely known, life expectancy at birth is independent of the demographic structure of the population, and therefore is adequate for measuring overall mortality. However, it neglects …

  • La concentration spatiale de la population espagnole de 1900 à 2001: Confirmations Empiriques

Open Access•Francisco J Goerlich, Francisco José Goerlich Gisbert et al.•ARTICLE•Population•2009•Cited by: 2•References: 10
