Prorokowanie dla królów i cesarzy: Apollo z Didymy a kultura epigraficzna Miletu
This paper deals with Apollo’s Oracle at Didyma in the Hellenistic and Roman age when it fully belonged to the polis of Miletos. Authors bring information on Didyma’s oracles to Alexander the Great, Seleukos I, Nikomedes II, Diocletian and Licinius. Inscriptions refer to oracles to other Seleukid kings. Indirect evidence points to oracles for Augustus, Trajan, and Julian. These oracles correlate with periods of strong local activity attested by t…
Hellenism East of the Euphrates
Hellenism, as understood by the ancients, was a set of cultural characteristics that set the Greeks apart from others. In the Hellenistic period, it was fundamentally defined by a commonality of language, worship of the gods, lifestyle and sport, and with the latter the related spread of gymnasia. Beyond the Euphrates, there is little trace of Greek settlement; acculturation into Greek culture of the settlers' children was not served by a tenuous…
Facing the challenges of the siltation of a sea gulf: The dissimilar cases of Priene and Miletos
Legacy of the East and Legacy of Alexander
The Founders of Western Pontic Cities
The Greek cities of the western coast of the Black Sea knew both foundation myths and the phenomenon of the second foundation, associated with the rebuilding of civic life after the invasion of Burebista, the king of the Getae and Dacian tribes from 82 bce to 44 bce . In most foundation stories the ktistes is either a god (in the case of the city of Dionysopolis) or a hero (in the cases of the cities of Kallatis, Tomis and Anchialos), and the sto…
Tracki śpiewak w Pierii: Mit o Orfeuszu a polityka hellenizacyjna władców Macedonii
Tomasz Mojsik, Orfeusz między Tracją a Pierią. Mit, kult i tożsamość macedońska, Białystok 2019, Polskie Towarzystwo Historyczne, Monografie 1Książka M. Mojsika stanowi próbę analizy komponentu pieryjskiego w mitach o Orfeuszu, będącego punktem wyjścia do rozważań nad problematyką etniczności i tożsamości macedońskiej. Zdaniem Autora mit o Orfeuszu wywodzi się z Pierii, a jego konotacje trackie są późniejsze i wtórne. Rozwój mitu o pieryjskim Orf…

Persia, Alexander the Great and the Kingdom of Asia
Historicity of the proclamation of Alexander the Great on the battlefield of Gaugamela as the King of Asia related by Plutarch should not be put in doubt. Quite numerous evidence speaks to the usage of this title by Alexander since at least the end of 333 BC. The overwhelming evidence of fifth and fourth c. BC sources demonstrates that for the Greeks (and Macedonians) at the age of Alexander the title King of Asia meant “the King of the Persian E…
Alexander the Great in Persepolis
While in Fars (January/February-May/June 330 B.C.) Alexander tried to gain acceptance of the Persians as the lawful successor to the Achaemenid kings. Failure of this endeavour and the perceived danger of Darius' III lead to a Macedonian campaign of terror aiming at breaking the Persian will to resist. It culminated in burning three palatial buildings in Persepolis in May 330 B.C. Alexander's decision to do so, rational at the moment of its execu…
